The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

 

PS4 Vs. PS3 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 36,651 – PS3

Gap change over last 12 months: 322,589 – PS4

Total Lead: 163,572 – PS3

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 3,019,082

PlayStation 3 Total Sales: 3,182,654

July 2016 is the 30th month of the PlayStation 4 being on sale in Japan. The gap increased during the month when compared to the PlayStation 3’s 30th month on sale by 36,651 units in favor of the PlayStation 3 and by 322,589 units in favor of the PlayStation 4 in the last 12 months. The PlayStation 3 currently leads by 163,572 units.

The PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. The PlayStation 4 has sold 3.02 million units in its first 30 months, while its predecessor the PlayStation 3 sold 3.18 million units.

No console this gen has gained a foothold in Japan. Big opportunity for the NX.

Well, if it's a hybrid handheld of course NX has big opportunities in Japan. Japan loves their handheld gaming. PS2 is the only home console in the top 5 best selling consoles in Japan. The rest are handhelds.

It should tell you something when PS4 is the 2nd fastest selling home console ever worldwide and yet the "failed" Vita still has a 2 mill lead over it in Japan.
