Microsoft: 'We’re Excited About VR' - News

Microsoft has not announced it is working on its own virtual reality headset, however, the company is excited for VR and has plans to support it with the upgraded Xbox One, known as Project Scorpio.

"We’re excited about VR," Xbox head of operations Dave McCarthy told MCVUK. "We brought Minecraft to Gear VR in the spring and Oculus this summer. We’re learning a lot as a game maker in the virtual reality space. There’s a tonne of healthy activity, especially in the high fidelity space on Windows 10, right now.

"And we’re making sure with Project Scorpio in 2017 that the capabilities are there with six terraflops, doing things at the right time with the next step. We’re big on this space and we think it’s going to work well across our ecosystem."

HoloLens, Microsoft's augmented reality headset, will remain a focus going forward.

"[HoloLens] was magical last year," he added. "From a practical consideration, the HoloLens team is focused on their developer edition that they are putting out right now. They are heads down trying to get that done at this point in time. Our commitment in the Windows ecosystem on VR, AR, MR hasn’t changed. We want to push all of those things going forward."

The Oculus Rift comes with an Xbox One controller, so it is likely Project Scorpio will support the VR headset.

If MS is smart, they'll support both the Oculus and the Vive.

And here I am remembering that last year they were saying VR was very bad and useless, only HoloLens would have space in the future, what happened?

You are confused. They never said SUCH things.. In fact. LAST YEAR is when they announced a partnership with Oculus.. So yeah.. Stop making sh*t up.. They have talked positive about VR from DAY FREAKING ONE..

Isn't pointing out that last year is when they partnered with Oculus "refuting" it.. ? Also. I didn't use the whole word.. So in both cases. Im confused as how I am in the wrong?

It was early 2015 and all he said was it wasn't a "now thing".. And was saying how HoloLens was going for something different. It wasn't a now thing in early 2015. Here we are mid 2016 and the PS VR isn't even released. Which is what he was referring to. Weeks later is when they announced the partnership with Oculus. There was no bad mouthing VR at all in that article. It was in reference to what was going on then and having just announced HoloLens.

So you are on of the few guys that didn't see it like that. Because at the time most users on the thread talking about it had it very clear that he was throwing jabs at PSVR because they didn't had a VR of themselves... and looking at only Scorpio in 2017 having it, they would still be "supporting" it with very little effort.

And about the word... we know the exact meaning even if you put "censorship" by yourself. At least to me it's the meaning and not the word that is important.

DonFerrari - VR isn't a now thing and E3 2016 didn't do much to change that. Did anybody leave E3 excited about VR? I didn't get the impression people did.

MS is dipping their toe in VR just in case people care but you're flat out lying when you said MS said VR is bad. Even at E3 2015 they talked about getting involved with VR and the X1 controller is being bundled with Oculus.

All we know about HoloLens is MS doesn't want to push it as a gaming device per se. While VR is all about gaming and porn right now.

I saw a lot of people excited by PSVR on this E3, even more with the horror games. so there is excitement.

And you also would be lying if you said MS wasn't downplaying it at the time because they hadn't anything on it for console at the time the PR was done.

DonFerrari - MS saying VR isn't a now thing is accurate. Frankly, VR is on market but barely relevant because compelling software doesn't exist YET. In the future and as prices go down, we will see more interest.

Can you really disagree with that?

DonFerrari DonFerrari (on 26 June 2016)

Nope I don't disagree with that. But do you disagree of the intention of the speech considering the context it was given? If they have no product on the market for that they had 0 need to comment on it, but they wanted to say what they said... considering Scorpio will launch in 18 months but they decided to talk about it, when it would be even more a not now thing. Same as cloud that they talked on release but even after 3 years it's even less of a now thing.

You're talking about unrelated things now. MS certainly overhyped the cloud, but that doesent change the fact VR isnt relevant right now.

If scorpion supports both occulus and VIVE (which I am betting it will), scorpion VR could be the edge Microsoft needs against sony to at least compete. By supporting the better VR techonology and selling at $500 in 2017, will be the cheapest way to experience both Vive and Occulus. 6TFLOPS is exactly the minimum/reccommended specs for the headsets and would be leaps and bounds above PS VR, both in term of tech, games and perhaps userbase considering many have already purchased both headsets.
