Ubisoft: 'There are No Towers' in Watch Dogs 2 - News

Open world games from Ubisoft in recent years have all featured towers that are required to be climbed in order to reveal missions.

Ubisoft is moving away from this with Watch Dogs 2. Missions will be revealed as you explore the world.

"It's not a game where you open your map and everything's there," Watch Dogs creative director Jonathan Morin told Eurogamer. "There are no towers. You just explore the world.

"Players start with a few followers in [hacker group] DedSec but pretty soon you realise you're going to need more if you want to pull off big operations. So you start free-roaming. Every time you get followers, it's like you're unlocking the DedSec hivemind. You're also unlocking new knowledge, new operations, new co-op missions. And then organically you hit those end-game milestones."

The plan for Watch Dogs 2 is to make San Francisco feel more free and open.

"You can barely touch the story," Morin added. "You have many different operations which give you followers, which guide your progression." Within the story there are three "milestones" to hit which finish the game's narrative, he added, "but mathematically you can unlock everything else through co-op or free-roam."

Firstly WD1 is a wonderful game. Lastly They weren't AC towers you climb, they were signal towers you hack. Play the game before you post a comment.

Oh please, WD1 was a boring game, just a GTA wannabe with lame hack mechanics.

I had no idea there were towers in anything but AC. That's kind of stupid, glad they're not doing it with WD2.

Towers are really stupid. They're nice vantage points but as a gameplay mechanic, they really break the immersion. Having to climb towers is great for making a game feel like it's making you do something just because it's a game.

Towers are also a pretty annoying gameplay mechanic in my opinion because of the way they affect the structure of gameplay. They divide gameplay into certain kind of segments, which makes the game feel less organic and natural.
