Inafune on Mighty No. 9: 'Even If It's Not Perfect, It's Better than Nothing'

Inafune on Mighty No. 9: 'Even If It's Not Perfect, It's Better than Nothing' - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 21 June 2016 / 10,838 Views

After many delays Mighty No. 9 finally released this week, however, the game has been a critical flop with just a current 58 metascore for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game.

Developer Comcept ran a live stream to celebrate the launch of the game and Keiji Inafune admitted the game wasn't what he had hoped

"The reality is they put everything into making this game," said Inafune, as translated by Ben Judd. "They didn't try to microtransaction it out, they didn't try to DLC it out for extra money. They put it all in.

"So, for now, this is what you see and what you get, for the Mighty No. 9 world. But, again, we can hope that if things go well, there'll be sequels. Because I'll tell you what, I'm not getting my 2D side-scrolling fill. And at the end of the day, even if it's not perfect, it's better than nothing. At least, that's my opinion."

Mighty No. 9 was funded on Kickstarter in September 2013 raising $3.8 million.

Thanks Vice.

"...Better than nothing" ?? Yea that's exactly what the backers were hoping to get when they donated.

it's better than nothing... looks on psn, hmmmm there is plenty of other options to pick that Might Number 9 though.

Lol imagine if there was a retail game box with this quote on it "It's better than nothing" - Inafune

I was thinking that as well. Would at least be funny.

Is it ACTUALLY better than nothing though?? Sometimes nothing is preferable to crap lol

mountaindewslave (on 21 June 2016)

haha the PR and team for this game are so awful. At the very least admit that the game didn't meet expectations BUT that you want to come back and make another game to make it up to the fans and supporters (those few who are left).

to instead say "hmmm, not what I expected but you get what you get instead of nothing" is like a slap in the face to those who supported a project that did not come to realization towards anywhere near what it was supposed to

I just think the whole thing is funny because I remember a few years ago, right before he announced this game, Inafune was in the media talking about how Japanese developers needed to step up their game, and basically, make better games. And now this... lol.

Ganoncrotch Paperboy_J (on 23 June 2016)

could have been some self criticism there?

Please hire someone that can actually speak japanese before you quote stuff like that.

It would be better than nothing if you had used your own money, Inafune. Where did the 4m go?

  • +3

to be fair, kickstarter takes a huge cut from all the projects backed on there, I think it's between 10-30% of the total cash raised to actually get the money out and into a bank account to start working with.

But yeah, small indie teams have created better games than this with little to no investment.

"I'm not getting my 2D side-scrolling fill" - Where has this guy been the past 10 years??

  • +3

He should buy a Vita.

  • +1
Nuvendil Frogger (on 22 June 2016)

He should buy an...well anythibg. Azure Striker Gunvolt, Shatae and the Pirate's Curse, Shovel Knight, Freedom Plamet, Volgarr the Viking, Ori and the Blind Forest, Dust and Elysian Tail, the list goes on and on and on. The number of good side scroller platformers in the indie space alone is mind numbing. That doesn't touch on anything from the bigger budget world like New Super Mario Bros U, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Yoshi's Wooly World, Kirby Triple Deluxe, Kirby Planet Robobot, Little Big Planet 3...you get the point. His statement is utter nonsense.

Ganoncrotch Frogger (on 23 June 2016)

Nuvendil so many of those games you listed are rated in the 80s and 90s on metacritic it's unreal lol. It has indeed been a fantastic generation for 2d side scrolling genre, if he was to believe there is no other options in the field could explain why this game is so bad, he just may well be unaware of how the genre has continued to grow and evolve over the last 30 years since Megaman launched.

That does not sound like a good type of attitude to have about releasing a game.

So who here has actually played it?

  • +2
naruball aLkaLiNE (on 21 June 2016)

No one. But everyone can tell you with absolute certainly that it's trash. Don't ask how.

  • -4
Nuvendil aLkaLiNE (on 21 June 2016)

I freely admit I have not and likely would not. I am not a Megaman enthusiast. However, I don't have to play it to see the movement is slow, the animations are janky, the graphics are crap, the framerate somehow still snags, the audio design is weak, and the release has been a trainwreck. As for the actual gameplay, I can only go by what people I trust have said and it has been unanimously declared a disappointment. And to respond to that with, "It's better than nothing" is a slap in the face, especially for a Kickstarter project.

Ganoncrotch aLkaLiNE (on 22 June 2016)

Do you need to pick up and taste dogshit on the street to know that it tastes bad? I certainly don't.

  • 0
aLkaLiNE aLkaLiNE (on 22 June 2016)

Thats a terrible comparison and it couldn't be any more unrelated. You'd be better off comparing it to an ugly car that might have fun handling. Which is why it's important that out of all these people talking bad about the game, we have some here that went against the grain and actually decided for themselves whether the game is fun or not.

You are encouraging going out to buy copies of a critically panned games just so that people can say "well that was a giant fuck up of a project from the get go" Other than the original Kickstarter story, every single time that Mighty No.9 appeared in the news this past year+ has been bad, either trying to drum up more money for things which had already been funded, holding portions of the game to ransom or that disaster in PR which happened on their forums after Dina Abou Karam stepped in. Lord no, I think based on those alone everyone (who hasn't already) should completely abandon this game and its threatened Anime/Film/Documentaries and anything else they stick on kickstarter for it tbh.

My comparison still stands, the only difference would be what I suggested you do wouldn't also cost you money to leave that taste in your mouth and the dog who put it there wouldn't consider doing the same thing again if you were to eat the first one.

aLkaLiNE aLkaLiNE (on 23 June 2016)

You're comparing a basic necessity of life (eating, breathing, sleeping) to something we do for entertainment. And the only thing I'm encouraging is that people form an unbiased opinion on something before they try it themselves, as there are a plethora of examples in movies, games and music where something was critically panned or failed at launch but later garnered a cult following for good reason. Can't say I'm surprised that you're so eager to be that superficial though

  • 0
Nuvendil aLkaLiNE (on 23 June 2016)

But you are talking like the only unbiased opinion worth having comes from experience. Therefore they must buy it to see if theyou should buy it. No, if you read a pile of professional reviews that declare it's bad, read a plethora of independent reviews that declare it disappointing, and read a heap of user reviews that state it's a waste of time and money, I think you can synthesize a pretty solid and fairly unbiased conclusion that the game is not worth your time or money and not buy it. And as I already said, there are MANY aspects of this debacle that you don't have to play to see that they are bad.

aLkaLiNE aLkaLiNE (on 23 June 2016)

I know next to nothing about this game d: just came in and saw a bunch of generalizing and wanted to see if we had anyone here that could give some feedback, that's all. I still stand by judging a game based on your own merits and using reviews as nothing more than a crutch. But yeah... I guess this game sucks lol

Ganoncrotch aLkaLiNE (on 23 June 2016)

I know there is a few times as well Alkaline where critics might say one thing about a game but you might find it the game of the year just because it ticks the right boxes for you, I had that with Too Human on the X360, turned out to be one of my favourite games last gen and I even got my bro into it too for some system linked great co op.

Still as Nuvendil says, if everything points to it being shockingly bad, don't give it money to find out that is the case most of the time, Like I said above, for me it was how poorly this games PR team went off the rails which killed any desire for me to invest in the product.

Better than nothing?... I guess that puts this game in line with all the other megaman-based flash games, fan-games, and hacks? Good thing I only backed five dollars. Not interested in this game anymore.

Kotaku just updated their article with crossing this quote out since it seems Inafune didn't say it, that was Judd's words on the matter.

For the backers, it is good the game is finally out. For gaming, it was a mistake.

  • 0
TheTruthHurts! (on 21 June 2016)

Maybe he was misquoted (I hope so at least). It is frustrating when people back a game and a quote like this makes it seem like they didn't put in the effort. Making statements like "we didn't micro-transaction or DLC it out at least", leaves a bad taste in my mouth and sounds like an excuse for releasing a poor product.

As far as I know it he didn't say that.
