Naughty Dog Apologises for Using Assassin's Creed Concept Art in Uncharted 4 Trailer

Naughty Dog Apologises for Using Assassin's Creed Concept Art in Uncharted 4 Trailer - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 24 February 2016 / 7,128 Views

It looks like someone at Naughty Dog made an error of judgment when working on the latest Uncharted 4 trailer. Ubisoft Montreal's Aymar spotted what seemed to be concept art from Assassin's Creed IV in the trailer and posted comparisons on Twitter.

Here's the image used in the Uncharted 4 Trailer:

And here's the original Assassin's Creed IV concept art:

Naughty Dog has since apologised, citing issues in the 'vetting process':

“In our eagerness to get the story trailer out we made a regrettable mistake and didn’t thoroughly vet the art work used for an in game painting. We’ve already updated the trailer. We hold all artistry in high regard and take full responsibility for having allowed this to happen.

We want to sincerely apologize to everyone at Ubisoft, the Assassin’s Creed team, the original artist, and our fans."

It's good of Naughty Dog to quickly edit the trailer but it's certainly a strange issue to have to deal with in the first place.

Thanks, VG24/7.

I want to make a witty comment about Naughty Dog or Nathan Drake being thieves because... the title... but I can't think of one. Someone do it for me in a reply v.v XD

It was prolly just a placeholder they forgot to replace, jeez...

How. How did they manage to somehow use Assassin's Creed art in the trailer for Uncharted 4.

Nathan Miles confirmed?

Honestly? They probably outsourced a lot of the in-game painting work. Some con just repurposed other works to create some of them, one happening to be an Assassin's Creed concept image. That's why it's important to thoroughly vet the artists and the work.

How? CTRL C and CTRL V, that's how.

I understand a mistake was made, but no one can really get terribly upset over that. All eyes are on U4 of course, and with a story trailer as spectacular as that, who wouldn't want to look forward to U4. Glad ND apologized. But that concept AC4 concept art was pretty damn gorgeous in both AC4 and U4

I would had considered that an honor. I think ND should leave Ubis artwork in the game as an easter egg. And Nathan should say something witty if you walk close to it.

So, that's why Nathan Drake is a thief!

Really? They don't find that flattering? This is Naughty Dog showing off your art (to a gigantic fanbase of Adventure Game enthusiasts) and you're complaining? That's some of the best publicity you can get. It's an Easter Egg!!! You know Naughty Dog mean well. It's developers (can we say Remedy) go to Naughty Dog for help in development and to get pointers on to better their game development. Naughty Dog a big part of the developer industry but hey, if you wanna piss em off, they're bigger than Ubisoft. Go ahead.

Did you just say Naughty Dog is bigger than Ubisoft? Lol, one AC game has more employees working on it than the entire history of Naughty Dog's employees in all likelihood. That might be cutting it close but we're talking a publisher with thousands of employees vs a studio with somewhere around 150 last I checked.

I won't even go into detail on you essentially brushing aside what can be taken as plagiarism. It's a problem, and it's good of ND to apologize because t was probably an honest mistake, but saying Ubisoft should THANK ND for stealing work without credit - even if they stole it for only a brief hour or so before it was brought to their attention - is horrible.

It's BECAUSE it's Naughty Dog that this a big deal. They are held to a higher standard, and they of all people understand the importance of artists in this industry, and that those artists deserve credit and compensation for their work. If developers could pull art off the Internet whenever they wanted to without paying for it, artists would never get paid for any of their hard work or talent. It's already hard enough as it is how many people expect artists to do work for free for the "exposure" and other nonsense.
Granted, I genuinely believe this was an honest mistake. It was probably a placeholder used internally till someone could paint something for it, but it got lost in the shuffle that is game development.

Plot twist: They put the entire Assassin's Creed game into Uncharted 4.

I'm pretty sure this is proof AC and Uncharted in the same universe. Which is why Nolan North is the voice of both Drake and Desmond. They are of the same bloodline and Drake is an assassin.

I originally thought that they were just trying to make an AC Blackflag "easter egg" since there are some pirate scenes in this new Uncharted it seems, but maybe it was put on there by mistake. I don't really think Naughty Dog would steal something like that like some "certain" users were saying.

What they should have done is paid the artist and left it in the trailer. Cheap arses, apologies are cheap.

Maybe Drake, having retired from treasure hunting, likes playing Assassin's Creed and dug that piece of art work. C'mon, Ubisoft, Nathan Drake likes your game. It's all good.

they seemed to have cropped out the little man standing by the boat.
Well who knows. Maybe the devs have folders on their server for uncharted concept art and inspiration from other places and one of the files landed in the wrong folder or something.
