January 2016 video games in the US declined four percent year-over-year from $627.6 million to $605.2 million, according to NPD. Software sales declined to $212.7 million, while sales from Accessories increased 14 percent to $235.5 million.

Hardware sales declined 15 percent to $157 million. This was mainly due to the reduction in price for the eighth generation consoles. Total units sold remained flat, according to NPD.

The shift in focus to the eighth generation is complete as it accounted for 96 percent of consoles sold. That is up from 84 percent a year ago. Seventh generation console sales plummeted 81 percent, while portable hardware sales dropped 21 percent.

Sony revealed that the PlayStation 4 was the top selling console for the month. Third party software sales were also the strongest on the PlayStation 4.

"Thanks to our fans and partners for making PlayStation 4 the top-selling platform and software sales leader in January, according to NPD," a Sony spokesperson told GamesBeat. "PS4 also saw impressive year-over-year growth in both hardware and software sales. We appreciate the support and will continue to deliver on our promise to bring the best entertainment experiences to gamers."

Call of Duty: Black Ops III was also the top selling game for the month in the US according to NPD estimates, beating out Grand Theft Auto V and NBA 2K16 for the top 10:

  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops III (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3, PC)
  2. Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
  3. NBA 2K16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
  4. Star Wars: Battlefront (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
  5. Fallout 4 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
  6. Minecraft (360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3)
  7. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
  8. Madden NFL 16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
  9. Lego: Marvel Avengers (PS4, Xbox One, 360, Wii U, PS3, 3DS, Vita)
  10. FIFA 16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)

"This is the third consecutive January where Grand Theft Auto V was a Top 5 title," said NPD analyst Liam Callahan. "Astonishingly, the game has moved up in ranking placement from fifth place in January 2014, to third in January 2015 and to the second-best selling game in January 2016."
