Video Game Website GameTrailers Shuts Down After Nearly 14 Years - News

Video game website GameTrailers opened in 2002 and after nearly 14 years closed its doors yesterday.

Associate editor Ben Moore told NeoGAF that the team was not notified of the closer ahead of time.

"I just wanted to confirm that GameTrailers is shutting down officially today," said Moore. "Everyone is being let go. We all found out mere hours ago, so we're still reeling a bit. Sincerely, thank you all for the tremendous support."

"When GameTrailers was founded in 2002, internet video was a revolutionary concept," said the company in a statement. "YouTube wouldn’t be founded for another three years; consumer live streaming was nine years away. Back then, online game journalism was still dominated by text articles and static imagery. The most prestigious coverage still happened in print. If you wanted to watch a show about video games, you had to watch it on a special TV station that had 10 shows.

"GameTrailers helped change all that. Today, game journalism is dominated by video: trailers, live gameplay, Let’s Plays, and news shows. Now there are millions of hours of content available at any time on your PC, your game console, your TV, and your phone.

"We’re proud we helped bring this world into being. That is the legacy of GameTrailers. We're grateful to all of our fans who helped make us successful. Thank you for your continued support over the years. It has been an adventure."

VGChartz wishes everyone who worked at GameTrailers good luck in their future endeavors.

Damn game trailers was the first gaming site I ever used extensively. It's a shame to see it go especially since their content is in my opinion way better than the stuff put out by ign and GameSpot

Same here. They will be missed.

I really liked GameTrailers. When searching for reviews for a game, theirs was often part of the 2-3 video reviews I watched. :(

Same here, they seemed to have similar tastes to me so I agreed most with their scores.

DANG IT. Their YouTube Channel was the best. Hope that the people who worked on their videos manages to keep the thing going, I'd be so sad without Kyle Bossman...

I agree, I will miss The Final Bosman probably the most. But this doesn't really surprise me when they were bought out and moved and had half their shows canned.

I used to love GT, but over the past few years the site has become a mess. Every major site update made it worse and they used the worst media player(s) I've seen on any website.
Videos would randomly stop loading, when you change a few times from full screen to windowed mode you'd sometimes only hear audio, so you need to restart the whole video. Many videos didn't run smooth either.

I liked their reviews. But, why?

One of the few gaming sites that actually employed gamers. I loved their E3 reactions last year. Shame to see them go.

The same company owns The Escapist and Gamefront. I'd be concerned if I were working at those websites.

Sad day. But the site is no longer needed. I probably frequented the site nearly everyday those first 7-8 years. Got all my news, reviews, AVGN, HAWP and, of course, latest trailers from gametrailers.com. Hopefully most of the remaining crew moves on to bigger and better things.

Answer is lacking. They have no reason to close.
