This monthly series compares the combined aligned sales of the 7th generation platforms with the 8th generation platforms. The two charts compare the home consoles as well as handhelds.

This first chart compares aligned home console sales between the 7th and 8th generations. That is the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii's combined sales aligned versus the combined aligned sales of the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U.

The 8th generation has struggled to keep up with the 7th generation, however for the first time in 12 months the 8th generation was able to close the gap by 477,305 units.

The 7th generation home consoles in their first 24 months sold 68.95 million units, while the 8th generation consoles have sold 56.41 million units. The 7th gen currently leads by 12.53 million units.

PS4 and Xbox One are doing their par but including the Wii U really skews things a lot.
Perhaps we should have a PS and XB vs last gen and a separate one for Wii and U.

Wii U and PSVita skew the chart.

I say it everytime, but these numbers are skewed because the Wii was less game console and more pop culture fad. Wii numbers aren't reflective of gamers, so this dip has less to do with "less gamers buying consoles" and more to do with "casuals not investing in next-gen".

I'd like to see this chart with Wii removed.
