Call of Duty: Black Ops III Sells an Estimated 6.65M First Week - Sales

Call of Duty: Black Ops III sold 6,654,935 units first week worldwide at retail, according to our estimates, which can be viewed on the VGChartz Global Weekly Chart for the week ending November 7th.

Breaking down the sales by platform, the game comfortably sold best on the PlayStation 4, with 3,750,881 units sold (56%), compared to 2,202,654 units sold on the Xbox One (33%). The PlayStation 3 version sold 351,593 units (6%) and the Xbox 360 version sold 319,942 units (5%).

 

Breaking down the sales by region, the game sold best in the US with 2,925,157 units sold (44%), compared to 2,370,583 units sold in Europe (36%). Looking more closely at Europe - the game sold 664,410 units in the UK, 360,804 units in Germany, and 432,786 units in France.

Here is how Call of Duty: Black Ops III's first week sales compare to other games in the franchise:

  7. Call of Duty: Black Ops III - 6.65m
  8. Call of Duty: World at War - 2.11m
  9. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - 1.50m
  10. Call of Duty 3 - 0.32m
  11. Call of Duty 2 - 0.27m

Call of Duty: Black Ops III launched worldwide on November 6th for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows PC.

Only on the new systems afaik. Also had a better 2nd week overall due to being a Friday release

I don't count CoD Ghost's sales as that was just flaky business what they did. During that first week I remembered Futureshop and Bestbuy had a promotion to simply trade in any crappy last gen game for a brand new copy of Ghost on PS3/360. It was that simple. Some of my friends and many other went and bought some cheap $5 game at EBgames/Gamestop then walked next door into Bestbuy for their copies.

Digital sales must have been much greater with black ops 3 and they are not tracked on this website

I dont see those numbers as accurate. Activation announced that BO III sold significantly better than previous release. However, VGZ is having the game below advanced warfare in sales.

Even though retail is still the majority, I think digital sales are a big factor now. Also the game came out on the 6th, so this is only taking one day of sales into account?

This is different from past years where COD released on Tuesdays so there were more days for the week before sales data came out. Still won't produce Blops II numbers, but something to keep in mind.

It's too bad we don't have any reliable digital sales, but it seems that after a couple of years of decline, CoD has leveled out. Far from the peak for sure, but still at a level 99% of games can only dream of.

This one's going to have much longer legs than Ghosts or Advanced Warfare did. I'd be surprised if it makes it past Ghosts 19m lifetime, but I expect it will handily outsell Advanced Warfare.

COD is still a beast of a franchise after all these years. This year the game is actually quite good too.

I am a bit surprised that it beat Halo 5 on the XB1 by a decent margin. COD is an annualized, multiplat title with a lot of venom deirected towards it. Not a Halo slam, it obviously did well enough, but I still say Halo is in a decline, that Halo 5 will not help to mitigate. COD seems almost as strong as ever. For the record, I have not played a Halo since Halo 2 and a COD since Modern Warfare 2.

Still a MUCH better week than Halo 5. Even if you split in three and consider only one platform. However, both franchises are decaying.

I may be jumping conclusions, but I think people really want fresh IPs that are not FPS.

Your first conclusion might be right, but as for the second one, we'll have to see how certain new IPs do next year. If they also underperform...welp. Decline all around
