The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.
PS4 Vs. PS3 Global:
Gap change in latest month: 94,937 – PS4
Gap change over last 12 months: 4,909,457 – PS4
Total Lead: 10,261,361 – PS4
PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 24,092,639
PlayStation 3 Total Sales: 13,831,278
June 2015 is the 20th month of the PlayStation 4 being on sale. The gap increased during the month when compared to the PlayStation 3’s 20th month on sale by 94,937 units in favor of the PlayStation 4. The PlayStation 4 currently leads by a total of 10.26 million units.
Both consoles launched in November. The PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. The PlayStation 4 has sold 24.09 million units in its first 20 months, while its predecessor, the PlayStation 3, sold 13.83 million units.

So I keep reading that the PS3 had a slow terrible start, the Xbone instead is just doing marvel and then according to vgchartz in the first 20 months the PS3 performed better than the XBone? This with Europe joining the club 6 months later.
Pretty flat this year...
Lot of big games released in first half 2008. GTAIV and MGS4 boost PS3 sales.
Now imagine how incredible this generation numbers could be if Nintendo was not dragging it down...
I disagree. Last generation was a kind of its own, with the Wii storming the market by surprise. If you go to the PS2 generation, things aren't much different than today. If today numbers are not the same as the Wii generation is also Sony's and Microsoft's fault, as they were also incapable of appealing past Wii owners.
