'Dramatic' Changes Being Made to Combat in Final Fantasy VII Remake - News

Final Fantasy VII's game director, Tetsuya Nomura, has told OPM that his team will be making 'dramatic changes' to Final Fantasy VII's combat gameplay in the remake.

Nomura subsequently clarified his comment, saying "And of course, that being said we want to clarify: We’re not going to be changing it into a shooter or something like that. We are going to be bringing dramatic changes, but we want to make sure it’s still recognizable."

Exactly what Nomura and his development team has planned is anyone's guess, although Nomura hints at Advent Children inspiring the changes, but one things clear - the game's Active Time Battle System won't be the same.

"but one things clear - the game's Active Time Battle System won't be the same." How is that clear? it's not great to jump to conclusions, they could mean dramatically changed in terms of your characters no longer remaining static during combat but still using the ATB system. Dramatic could just mean that Cloud will be made of more than 20 polygons now! :D

Sure. Say you're making changes. But don't list them now. That signals you will get bad backlash.

sigh
With the shift to action RPG combat and even XIII's paradigm system, I'm assuming it's another system where you'll play pretty much as a single character and the rest will be completely handled by the AI and you won't actually make use of commands and deciding what you actually want the party to do.

Bleh.

There's a gap to be filled in the turn based RPG area. There's a reason Bravely Default was widely popular. It was largely a return to the roots of JRPG. Tweak the turn based system, sure, but I hope they aren't throwing it out entirely.

Unless of course you have the ability to jump from character to character while the ones not under your immediate control run off of AI, like XII.

Would be nice to know what exactly these dramatic changes will be...
