7th Gen vs 8th Gen - Aligned Sales Comparison - May 2015 Update - Sales

This monthly series compares the combined aligned sales of the 7th generation platforms with the 8th generation platforms. The two charts compare the home consoles as well as handhelds.

This first chart compares aligned home console sales between the 7th and 8th generations. That is the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii combined sales aligned, versus the combined aligned sales of the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U.

The 8th generation has struggled to keep up with the 7th generation and in May 2015 the gap only continued to grow. Poor Wii U sales compared to the Wii is the primary reason for this. The gap grew by 1.59 million units.

The 7th generation home consoles in their first 19 months sold 51.82 million units, while the 8th generation consoles have sold 42.15 million units. The 7th gen currently leads by 9.67 million units:

7th Generation Total Combined Home Console Sales: 51,823,984

8th Generation Total Combined Home Console Sales: 42,152,839

Total Lead: 9,671,145 – 7th Generation

This second chart compare aligned handheld sales between the 7th and 8th generations. That is the DS and PSP combined sales aligned, versus the combined aligned sales of the 3DS and PlayStation Vita.

The gap between the two generation of handhelds has grown in favor of the 7th generation. The gap has grown so much that the 7th generation has nearly doubled the sales of the 8th generation.

The 7th generation handhelds in their first 42 months sold 108.69 million units, while the 8th generation handhelds have sold 54.51 million units. The 7th generation grew its lead by 1.72 million units in May and currently leads by 54.51 million units:

7th Generation Total Combined Handheld Sales: 108,691,592

8th Generation Total Combined Handheld Sales: 54,514,366

Total Lead: 54,177,226 – 7th Generation

We lost the casual market for consoles, but the core game market is doing very well.

This isn't a shocker. The 8th gen can't play 1080p at 60fps so it is more of a 7.5 gen which obviously will struggle to shift consoles.

Because there are 0 1080p 60fps games..

Because of the Wii U

PS4 and XBone are still far from their peak, as both are up YoY. Wii-U already peaked, and is still doing abysmally, hence the dramatic difference. Even PS4's amazing sales can't make up for the difference between Wii and Wii-U... It's good to know how much better both 8th gen consoles are doing their 7th gen counter parts.

I have never read a more incorrect statement.

The problem is the Wii -> Wii U situation. The Wii sold a lot to people who didn't normally play games, whereas the Wii U (while being what Nintendo diehards have been asking for) lost that appeal. Nintendo's monumental failure is the reason why 8th gen is "behind", even though core attachment is up.
