Iwata: E3 'Reaction From Media Was Not That Unfavorable'

Iwata: E3 'Reaction From Media Was Not That Unfavorable' - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 03 July 2015 / 6,144 Views

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata told investors at The 75th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders that reactions from the media at E3 were not that unfavourable.

"We listen sincerely to the voices of fans who were not happy about the announcements we made in the online Digital Event, and we will have to make further efforts to improve," said Iwata. "But when it comes to the reactions to our E3 activities overall, the reactions from trade customers and the media were not that unfavorable. I hope you will understand it."

"Once again, about the reason why at E3 this year we focused on the titles that will be released in the near future, as Mr. Miyamoto just said, which points we should focus on at E3 change every year depending on the development status of each product and future deployment schedule. When we think it necessary to discuss future products even if the release timing is yet to be determined, we may do so without being able to discuss the details, and when we have more concrete proposals on the products to be released in the near future, we will try to explain the appeal of that product as best as we can.

Since we determine our E3 theme each year, you might have had quite a different impression this year in comparison to last year. We are listening to people’s opinions and we will try to improve next year and beyond."

Nintendo has been talking too much about this last E3. They must be worried.

well hes admitting the mistake, and hopefully they really learn from this, like they learned from the Wii U.So they can improve with the NX. I think the next Nintendo Direct or announcement is gonna be a bit more hype hopefully :)

The media aren't your customers. Also, that's because of all Treehouse and Nintendo World Championship stuff. Clever, still doesn't change the negativity of the Digital Event.

we get it nintendo, you are focusing on games releasing soon because you are getting ready for the next console. No need for damage control.

Nintendo not wanting to talk about games too far ahead makes it sound like they want to ensure a lot of their projects at the moment will truly be released at the times they say they will. They've been delaying and not fulfilling their promises a lot lately, so I think they're actively trying to change that. They keep bringing it up over and over again.

Problem is, they should admit that instead of acting like they've always been this way. Comes off as stubborn.

I really think what it is is that hey've seen what happens to games that are announced early. Way too many games over the last 2 years have been overhyped because of the publishers insisting that early reveals are the best marketing strategy. The problem is that the games can't live up to the hype. What'll often happen is that these games will come out, get mediocre reviews, get initial strong sales and then disappear from the sales charts a few weeks later because of the negative reception. Another thing that happen is that when a game is revealed very early, it's often dressed up to look nice for E3 and then the final product ends up looking very different.

By keeping games a secret up until less than a year from launch, Nintendo is able to control the hype for a game. The problem is how do they tell people this. If you tell them you don't want your competitors copying off of you, that comes across as arrogant. If you tell your audience that you don't want them to get their hopes up, that isn't good either. Nintendo picked the option to say "this is what you're getting soon and we're not telling you anything else". That's the better thing to say, although not necessarily a good thing.

Because of the internet, people seem to forget that the main appeal of E3 is that retailers get to try out the games they'll be selling in their stores this holiday. That's why E3 exists. It serves the same purpose the Consumer Electronics Show served before it. The only problem with CES was that the games industry did not get good representation there. Anyway, Iwata claims that they were happy with what they saw and that's a good thing. Even though the digital event is for us, satisfying the people who plan to carry and promote your products is even more important. That's also why they focused so much on what's coming out over the next few months. Retail businesses don't give a shit about what's coming in 18 months. They want to know what they'll be selling for Christmas.

Besides, there will be plenty of opportunities and plenty of Nintendo Directs this year to satisfy gamers who were disappointed by E3. That isn't the case with the business world. They need to know what's going on right now.

What the hell can NX be that's better than what's out there? Are they gonna pull a WiiU again and make something current to the present consoles? Will publishers be on board in decent numbers?

This one boggles me.
