The 8GB Wii U basic model has been discontinued in Japan, Nintendo of Japan has announced (as reported by Kotaku).

The 8GB Wii U is "slated to go out of production shortly," reads the Nintendo.co.jp page. However, the black Wii U 32GB Deluxe model will still be sold, as well as a new white 32GB model starting in June.

It's price difference was never enough to justify it over the 32gb one (except in some bundles), so I guess it was expected. It would be nice if Nintendo said the amount of every model sold, just to compare.

At least the white case isn't gonna be wasted.

Because a sku that wasn't selling was discontinued? I remember laughing at my friend for wasting money on an "Elite" Xbox 360 over the regular sku. I wasn't surprised at all when the Elite sku got discontinued.

Good. It's entirely useless. 8GB is nothing, really, and while 32GB isn't much better, at least it can hold XCX.

I have the 8gb model, never bothered me with the storage as I picked up a 32gb SD card for cheap. (unlike Vita cards >.>)

There should be two models. One with and one without the gamepad. Sell the gamepad version for $249.99 and the 'padless model with classic controller for $149.99. Then, just make sure you develop every first party game with both classic and gamepad controls.

might as well sell a version without a hdmi out port on it for all the good a system without it's controller would be.

It's time to give up the fight. There's no way in hell Nintendo is taking that NFC reader out of the Wii U package after the success of amiibo.
