Steam Allows Community-Made Workshop Content to be Sold - News

Valve has announced that it has updated the Steam service to allow community-made Workshop content to be sold via the Steam Workshop. Mod creators will be able to either sell their creations at a price of their choosing or keep them free.

"We think this is a great opportunity to help support the incredible creative work being done by mod makers in the Steam Workshop," said Tom Bui at Valve. "User generated content is an increasingly significant component of many games, and opening new avenues to help financially support those contributors via Steam Workshop will help drive the level of UGC to new heights."

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the first title to allow mod creators to sell their creations. More games will be added in the coming weeks. Various mods for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim have already been downloaded more than 170 million times, so this is potentially a huge source of revenue for content creators.

I think it may be worth writing another article on the absolutely massive backlash this has had. Probably the largest in Valve's history.

Not as great as Half life 3 but slightly close.

Valve taking the first $400 and 75% cut of the their revenue. "help financially support those contributors". LOL... Also this article is missing lots of information.

Not a good move Valve, actually Early access wasn't good either.

If steam does this WITHOUT greenlighting those mods then its pathetic. "Hey lets introduce greenlight so only good games or most wanted games come to our platform but then allow idiots to sell their crap on the same platform because we dont like logic" Either use greenlight so only quality mods can be sold or dont do that at all.

The thing is, those mods are on Steam already. Games on Greenlight aren't. I get your point but I think it's not exactly a fair comparison.
