Crytek struggled financially last year and even had problems paying its employees. Several sources have told Kotaku that Amazon has now come in and helped the developer out via a licensing deal that will allow Amazon to use Crytek's game engine, CryEngine.

One of the sources quoted in the report states that the deal was worth around $50 million, while another said it was $70 million. The sources have remained anonymous and did not say what Amazon intends to actually use the CryEngine for.

Crytek co-founder Faruk Yerli had said they'd struck a big licensing deal earlier this year, but did not go into any details at the time. Expect Crytek to release more information in the near future.

Crytek's problem is they couldn;t convince enough 3ed parties to use their engine and collect royalties. Crytek was never a good enough game developer to be able to make it by selling their own games. Not sure how an Amazon deal is going to help them long term unless Amazon is going to pay them $50 million per year.
