According to the latest episode in the YouTube series Did You Know Gaming?, Grand Theft Auto V is the fifth most expensive entertainment product of all-time once adjusted for inflation.
The game apparently cost a whopping $268 million to make, making it the third most expensive video game of all-time, behind only Destiny and Modern Warfare 2.
It seems to have been well worth it, however. We estimate that the game has sold over 43 million copies on consoles.

I think it's more surprising that modern warfare 2 made the list.
It only cost $30-40 million to develop, but as much as $200-250 million in marketing. Also, I'm not sure Activision has released any numbers on COD games costs since.
Destiny is on that list? Really?
Destiny's actual cost numbers are not known. The CEO said that Destiny will cost Activision $500 million to develop. Some fans claimed that was under the 10 year plan contract. Bungie's community manager claimed the actual number was not close to the $500 million, but it could have been damage control.
Most of Destiny's cost was marketing I'm sure.
Clearly R* spends their money better than Activision.

What's really (not) surprising at all is they most likely made this back within the first hour of launch.
It made it back and more in 24h. Or maybe during the pre-order stage.
