E3 Hands-On: John Daly's ProStroke Golf - Preview

John Daly should be a recognizable name to anyone who follows golf.  He made quite a name for himself in the 90's by winning 5 PGA Championships. His illicit activities took him out of the limelight for a while, but has since reformed himself and is now coming out with his own videogame.

I got to try the game with Move controls and it felt pretty good even for someone who had never touched a golf club.  After choosing there I wanted the ball to land the game would let me know what power I should be aiming for and then it was all up to me.  I held the Move down like a golf club and after a few practice swings I pressed the center button to spawn the ball and took a shot.

How hard you swing is mostly dictated by how high you lift the club and the game gives a nice visual cue so even an amateur can get a feel for it.  The ball went a decent 300 yards or so and the developer told me that the final game had multiple difficulty levels so even those of my skill level or even worse could still play and enjoy.

After a few drives I was allowed to try putting which took a bit more finesse and was based on how hard the final swing was and less about how high the club went.  Once I whiffed on the first try I was able to sink the put and get a bogie which honestly I’m slightly proud of.  The graphics aren’t up there with other golf games as of yet, but this could change in development.

Obviously since this was with the Move the demo was on PS3 but the developer told me the final game would be on PC and 360 as well.  Golf aficionados should take a look at this when it releases some time in the future.
