GDC 2011: Hands-on: Burgertime HD - Preview

Burgertime HD is a remake of game from 1982 where the goal of each level was to go up and down a donkey kong-like series of platforms and ladders to create hamburgers.  The ingredients for the hamburgers are all ready and you just have to walk over them to send them down towards the plate below.  The HD version keeps this general idea and updates the visuals as well as the gameplay.  Instead of just a bunch of girders and ladders making up a square level, Burgertime HD has you running around a cylindrical level with a number of different obstacles in your attempt to create burgers.

Platformers need an element of danger so of course you have some burger themed enemies to worry about.  Mr. Hot Dog, Mr. Pickle, and Mr. Egg all make their return to video games and you can’t so much as touch them.  The only way to deal with these enemies is to use the level layout to avoid them somehow, stun them with a shot of pepper, kill them with a spatula, or drop burger ingredients onto them.  If you’re a high score junky the best way to kill your enemies is to drop ingredients on them because the ingredients will then drop further than they normally would and you get a bonus for adding some additional flavor to your burgers.  Pepper and all other items are limited so you can’t rely on them too much.

Burgertime HD looks like the perfect game for fans of the original, and it might be worthwhile for fans of retro platforming in general on PSN.  There was no story that I could see so your enjoyment of the game will probably be wholly dependent on if you love challenging platformers and going for the high score over just working towards progression.  I only played the game on PSN at the conference but look for Burgertime HD on PSN, XBLA, WW, and PC later this year.
