E3 2011 Eyes-On: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier - Preview

The Tom Clancy name is getting a lot of use these days. Not that that’s a bad thing, most of the games to come out under the branding have been stellar military shooters that bring a degree of realism to a genre that often casts you as a super-human soldier. Enter Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, the latest entry in the series, now we may have known about this one ever since 2009 but E3 2011 was definitely its big coming out, now with all new squad commands and even Kinect connectivity, this isn’t your granddaddy’s war game.

The demo that was shown at E3 2011 featured a group of ghosts being charged with entering a remote village and recovering a VIP from a rogue group. The demo featured some of the game’s new mechanics including the use of personal camouflage (basically a small one man cloaking device), a new small drone device that can scout out the battlefield as well as enemy positions, and finally a new squad based mechanic where your fellow ghosts will react intelligently to enemy movements.

After an intense firefight the team of ghosts reaches the hostage only to be ambushed by an even larger (and angrier) mob of hostiles and an attack helicopter. The team assumes a diamond position with the VIP in the center (a real world extraction strategy) and make it to temporary safe cover. Once there you have the ability to call in an airstrike featuring the US Air Force’s most powerful non-nuclear bomb, the MOAB (Mother Of All Bombs), which results in a spectacular explosion ending the demo to a roaring cheer from the crowd.

Apart from intense battles and bombing Future Soldier will also feature the most detailed gun customisation we have seen so far in video games, right down to the individual gas chambers. This portion can also be totally done via Kinect. Simply tell Kinect what you want modified or you can even tell it to optimize your gun for certain specific missions, like sniping or assault runs. You can then take your guns to a firing range where you can test them out. This mode can also be used with Kinect, just pull the gun out of your back holster with a simple gesture and shoot by opening and closing your hand.

On top of all these new add-ons and modes the game as also received a graphical overall, which has made it one of the most stunning games to come out of E3. The looks and visuals are all top notch and in some instances you could almost swear they were taking straight out of real life. One point which did concern me however was the level of in game advertising. I mean do we really need an ad for ‘Under-Armour’ in the middle of a run-down, east African village?

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is quite possibly the best showing by a shooter here at E3. Everything from the revamped and real-world gameplay mechanics to the intriguing plot, to the innovative use of Kinect and the stunning visuals have catapulted this game near the top of my wishlist. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is set to launch in March of 2012 for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.
