Tucked away in a small corner of the SEGA booth at the Los Angeles Convention Centre was a game that instantly caught my eye. A game that featured cartoony visuals, a ton of unique characters, over the top gratuitous violence, very adult humour and rabbits running around with jetpack chainsaws. A game that made me say...

Hell Yeah!

You play as Ash, a skeletal bunny rabbit who just so happens to be the prince of hell. One day, Ash is caught pleasuring his… well, whatever skeletal rabbit hell princes have between the knees, and the photos are leaked online. Being the evil son of a bunny that he is, Ash sets off on a quest for revenge to kill whoever’s seen or has copies of those photos.

Hell Yeah! falls into the ‘Metroidvania’ style of 2D adventures, where you explore a large maze-like level, collecting new power-ups and backtracking to previous areas with these new abilities. You will also be able to purchase new weapons and items through the in-game shop.

Your primary weapon is a massive drill that doubles as a jetpack allowing you to tear through enemies and obstacles in no time. Where the game’s combat actually starts to set itself apart is in the boss battles. Here you not only have to bring the boss’s health bar down, you also have to complete a quick mini-game to allow you to continue. From what I’ve seem, these mini-games are all unique and all play into that boss’s specific death animation, though I can’t say if the same holds true throughout the rest of the game.

Visually Hell Yeah! looks awesome. The crisp, vibrant art style suits the world perfectly. A particular stand out for me are the character designs, all of which are unique and even a little twisted. And, while it’s hard to get a good ear for the sound design over the hustle and bustle of E3, Hell Yeah! definitely sounds great, with the creepiness of hell really coming to life via the soundtrack.

The developers are aiming for somewhere between 10 and 15 hours of gameplay in the final build; great length for a game of this genre. As of writing Hell Yeah! is scheduled for a fall 2012 release on Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network and Steam.
