Mobile gaming has surged ahead in recent years. With smartphones able to play something more impressive than Snake, as well as the dedicated handhelds of large game companies, there are now a multitude of ways to get your gaming fix, no matter what you are doing.

While it had a shaky start, Nintendo's 3DS has not only thrived since its launch last year, but it just recently outsold the PS3's lifetime sales in its mother country in less than a third of the time. While this year saw plenty of excellent titles for the handheld, these were the ones that really floated to the top.

The Nominees are...

Kid Icarus: Uprising

Resident Evil: Revelations

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask

Zero Escape: Virture's Last Reward

And the Winner is...

Resident Evil: Revelations

If somebody had told me last year that a handheld version of Resident Evil was going to be significantly better than that year's console version, I would have slapped them and called them a Jill Sandwich.

But that's what happened. Revelations was an action-packed showpiece that really shows off just what the 3DS is capable of in the right hands. On top of a single player campaign as long as those found in most console action titles, there's also an addictive multiplayer mode, and it's still the best reason to own a Circle Pad Pro add-on.

The second screen of the device is used to give you a constant map and a quick inventory system, so the action never stops. However, it balances this action by giving you varied gameplay that truly does remind you that this series has its roots in survival horror.  Tense moments, surprise enemy encounters, limited resources, environmental hazards; it feels like true Resident Evil through and through.
