When Nintendo released the Wii U with such limited disk space many were expecting problems such as the following. In a recent announcement Nintendo cautioned gamers that the digital copy of Lego City Undercover will require an external hard drive.

The game's publisher placed the following warning on Nintendo's Wii U eShop: "An external hard drive is required to download this software," a notice on the game's official site reads, "Visit support.nintendo.com for information about storage options."

While no official file size has been reported, rumors suggest that this open-world adventure title may be as large as 22 GB. To put this in perspective for Wii U gamers, the Basic Wii U set comes loaded with 8 GB of memory. After the system software is installed there are only about 3 GB of empty space. The Premium Wii U came with 32 GB of space, and only 25 GB remain after the system installation.

If you have a Premium Wii U and no other games or software installed you could just barely manage to download Lego City Undercover. Basic Wii U owners would need almost 8X the amount of space.

On the bright side, at least Wii U owners can use any of a variety of non-proprietary hard drives to boost their Wii U's storage.
