Vlambeer are known in the industry for making bat-shit crazy games that ooze with a sweet, sticky, and addictive kind of fun. They burst onto the scene with the hugely popular Super Crate Box, before following up with another hit in the form of Ridiculous Fishing. Vlambeer are now attempting to smash another home-run out of the park with their latest, and rather eccentric, take on arial combat, LUFTRAUSERS

If you’ve ever played a Vlambeer game before you’ll instantly recognise the graphical style on display in LUFTRAUSERS. It looks like it’s been ripped straight out of an 80s arcade cabinet, with the pixilated ships, planes, and explosions giving off a distinctly retro vibe. This time, though, that retro look has been given a vintage coating in the form of a sepia filter, and you’ll be pleased that they’ve opted for such a clear and distinctive tone, because it will make keeping track of your plane infinitely easier once the delectable carnage has started.

Controlling your instrument of death is easily done on the PC. You simply use the arrow keys to maneuver your plane, and use the X key to fire. It feels instantly natural, and I was quickly pulling off some pretty incredible stunts that undoubtedly left the attendees behind me scraping their jaws off the floor. I’m confident that these intuitive controls will transfer well onto other devices that use analog sticks, such as the PS3 and Vita, however as is usually the case with these things, time will tell.

It really is crucial that LUFTRAUSERS controls as well as it does, because it gets absolutely insane at times. You’ll need to weave your way in and out of enemy fighters and ships, taking them down and racking up a high score as you go. There are objectives that can be completed during levels, however sometimes you’ll just want to take flight and wreak enough havoc to hopefully beat your high score. LUFTRAUSERS will have you coming back for more, and more, and at the moment I’m struggling to see when the boredom could possibly kick in.

LUFTRAUSERS will release simultaneously on PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, however at present no official release date has been confirmed. I for one can’t wait to get back into the cockpit, and I have a feeling that Vita owners in particular will probably want to keep their eyes on this tasty morsel. Regardless of what platform you choose to purchase LUFTRAUSERS on, this is one game that won’t disappoint you.

Now, let me get back to daydreaming about my mesmerising flight patterns... I'm a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar.
