Metal Gear Sexism? Kojima Wants "More Erotic" Character Designs - News/ 6,628 Views
Earlier today, Hideo Kojima Tweeted that he wants the characters of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain to be more sexualised in order to promote sexy cosplay. Yes, really. This is a thing that happened.
To quote his Twitter feed:
"I've been ordering to Yoji to make the character more erotic, and he did it well. Recently I've been making characters this way…"
"I create the setting thoroughly, how he/she spent early life, name, style, favorite phrase, fashion, action to stand the character out."
"The initial target is to make u want to do cosplay or its figurine to sell well."
He rounded it off with a quick message saying, "Dear Cosplayer friends, something like this for example." and enclosing a link to the above image of the mute sniper Quiet's posterior. He plans to release the full CG image of her on Friday so that cosplayers can recreate it. Classy.
In typical Kojima fashion, though, this moment of bonkers sexism was immediately followed-up with some surprisingly relevant comments on character design:
"Learnt from watching "MAD MAX" 1 & 2 is that every character is well characterized. This is important. Characters w/o names or lines"
"Characters wo names or lines even has strong characteristics. No need to depend on his/her past flashback."
"You are able to read the character by observing his/her silhouette, look, and the way he/she walks."
True enough, some characters simply are strong enough to be defined by their actions more so than their words. However, is Quiet going to be such a character? Or is she going to exist solely for the purpose of getting women the world over to dress up in ways that'll make Metal Gears Solid (blimey, what a Painfully tortured pun that was)?
