UPDATE: Ubisoft has filed a Petition to the Director to block the abandonment, saying that the abandonment request was "fradulent". The trademark has not yet been abandoned by the US Patent and Trademark office.

ORIGINAL STORY: Some odd news out of the United States Patent and Trademark office today, as a keen-eyed NeoGAF poster noted that Ubisoft has abandoned one of its six trademarks connected to upcoming open-world adventure title, Watch Dogs.

So...is anyone still watching the dogs?

The request for express abandonment, which can be found here, was signed by Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot on February 1st. It states that "the applicant hereby expressly abandons the application for trademark registration made under the serial number identified above." The abandonment comes as a surprise since Ubisoft just had their request for extension on the trademark approved on January 29th.

Until Ubisoft comments on the abandonment, we don't know why Ubisoft abandoned the trademark. A cancellation of the game seems unlikely, as Ubisoft is expecting it to be a big revenue driver this year. A possible theory floating around is that the game known as Watch Dogs may soon have a new name.

We will update this story as more information comes in.
