TGS '14 - Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- is Hard to Say, Fun to Play - Preview

Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- debuted in Japanese arcades in February of this year. The game will be making its console debut on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 this winter. I had the chance to play a few quick battles, putting the PS4 version of the game through its paces at this year’s Tokyo Game Show.

The first thing you notice about Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- is how gorgeous it is. The series has always been known for having beautiful, hand drawn 2D sprites but with this edition they have been replaced with 3D rendered cel-shaded character models. The fighting still takes place on a 2D plane but the blend of 3D animation and backgrounds makes for a stunning and surreal visual effect. The colors pop vibrantly from the screen and combos are a joy to see in fluid motion.

For my first bout I chose the mysterious swordsman Venom and faced off against the scythe-wielding (and Gun’s-N-Roses inspired) Axl-Low. I am not the most familiar with the ins and outs of Guilty Gear’s fighting system so I admit I am guilty of a fair bit of button mashing. The AI was set on a low difficulty but even then I had difficulties with Axl always blocking or countering my strikes. In the end I managed to eke out victories in both rounds by the skin of my teeth thanks to some fortuitously timed evasions.

I felt up for another fight so I chose the burly, belt-strapped, and stupidly-named Sol Badguy. This time I fought against Zato-1. I was much better at controlling Sol than I was Venom. I executed many more combos and throws, including my special attack. I earned a perfect victory in one round and narrowly missed out on it during the other. That ended my time with Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- on a good note. Both of my fights took place in the interior of some sort of castle with malevolent-looking spirits and creatures looking down on the fight hanging from chandeliers in the background.

Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign’s- roster taps out at 15 fighters, including a new addition not found in the arcade game, Sin Kiske. An additional rose-bearing female fighter named Elphet is also promised as future DLC.  Guilty Gear Xrd-Sign- looks to be a fast, fun, traditional 2D fighter with a riveting new face lift. Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- should be available worldwide on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 this December.
