Sony Sued Over Killzone: Shadow Fall Resolution - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 18 December 2014 / 7,445 Views

Sony is being sued over the resolution in Killzone: Shadow Fall. Plaintiff Douglas Ladore has stated that Sony said the game would run at 1080p, 1920x1080. However, in the end the game ran at 960x1080 and was upscaled to 1080p.

Ladore says this was misrepresenting, as the box of the game said the game ran at 1080p. The process of upscaling is called 'interpolation,' according to Game Informer.

In order for Ladore to win the lawsuit he must "show harm above and beyond the contract (or representations of the qualities of the game) to have been breached."

Sony has responded saying they do not comment on pending litigation.

hmmmm, sony sued because someone think KZ's graphics don't meet expectations....well if you are an xbox owner how about suing every games developer as their graphics don't meet the PS4's or if you are an AC-U player how about going after ubisoft because their game didn't work at Launch....or wait for it a PS4 player who thought they were getting DC at launch as a freebie but are still waiting. People should get a grip, this lawsuit is an Absolute waste of time and money

This case is all but dead due to what the article states in paragraph 6. What is he going to say? The 1080i variant hurt his eyes and couldn't go to work?

That's more interesting and something that should NOT be ignored is this:

"Sony also tried arguing that games are not goods. The court upholds that games sold on disc are not simply delivery mechanisms for licenses. The same can not be asserted for games sold via digital channels, which creates a line between these methods of purchase."

So I'll suppose I'll keep buying my disc versions over digital whenever I'm able.

What I don't get and I have the Game box in front of me and on the back under HD video output it states 480P-720P-1080i-1080P no where does it say what the native res is for mp

960 x 1080 IS 1080p, which is why referring to the vertical resolution only is stupid. You can't upscale 1080p to 1080p, that doesn't make any sense. What it isn't is Full HD (which is 1920 x 1080), but I'm not sure if it was marketed as Full HD.

It really comes down to what part of the rendering pipeline is the resolution 'set', KZ doesn't just take a 960 x 1080p and stretch it across 1920, it uses data from the previous frame and the movement of the players PoV from the previous frame to work out what data from the previous frame can be reused in the new frame. The output of this stage is 1920 x 1080p. True upscaling just involves stretching the image to the required resolution and then applying a quick filter to smooth some of the mess out, with no reference to data from the previous frame or movement of the players PoV.

and wasnt that only for the multiplayer? isnt the single player true native 1080p (1920x1080)?

What I don't get is, if this guy or comp who is suing, who gets the money? Surely he can't sue for the amount greater than what he/they personally lost, or will they distribute the winnings to the people actually financially affected ala us people who bought it

Awwwww...Poor Douglas Ladore. What a worthless sack of monkey shit. The very idea that anybody would sue any company over something like this is pathethic. I seriously hope this jackass loses something important he has in life. Then he'll have something to cry about.

I think that company should advertise their product properly. They know that if they say "well its not really full HD, but we use some kind of trick that makes it like it is" that would NOT make the product more attractive. We have the right to be told the truth about the product we are buying. If resolution did not matter, then people wouldn't care wich version has the better resolution, but we all know its not the case. Nowadays we are given so much BS from gaming companies that it's not surprising to see gamers not taking it anymore. Also I'd like to reply that the very idea that nobody could sue any company for all the BS they are giving us is untolerable.

Wighead, the box for KZ-SF never says its Full HD, it only says its 1080p, Sony can't be held liable for someone's (incorrectly) perceived idea that 1080p = Full HD.

Wighead. So this is something to sue over? That's a f***ing joke. Get your money back. What did this jackass lose that warrants a lawsuit? And you find the lack of ability to sue over such inconsequential flotsam "untolarable"? Is your comprehension of the meaning of that word as iron clad as your spelling of it? What a pack of entitled, petulant morons.
