Sony: Launch of the PlayStation in 1994 was Important for the Industry - News

PlayStation UK and Ireland boss Fergal Gara talked with MCVUK about the success of the PlayStation over the last 20 years and how important the original PlayStation was for the gaming industry. He also talked about the 20th anniversary PlayStation 4.

"So, from one major anniversary to another, I have the honour of writing for MCV as PlayStation continues to celebrate its landmark 20th birthday," said Gara. "Although I was not directly involved in the business at the time, I am not alone in thinking that the launch of PlayStation in Japan on December 3rd 1994 was a key moment for this fantastic industry we all work and thrive in."

"[PlayStation boss] Andy House has just announced an original PlayStation-inspired PS4, manufactured in limited numbers, but getting an amazing response from PlayStation fans across the globe. A fitting tribute to a formative console and a great 20 years."

"We decided to follow up Black Friday with Original Grey Wednesday this week where some genuine PlayStation players were able to get hold of this extremely rare PS4 20th Anniversary Edition console for a startling £19.94."

"Now we start to work with our partners at retail to again offer a small number of these consoles to the cognoscenti."

"It just remains for me to wish you all a very successful last few weeks of 2014. There should be plenty of scope for all to prosper and, hopefully, Black Friday has proven to be a market boost and not a substitute for a great December."

Yeah their impact can be seen even today. The firesale we seen in the US for November is a direct result of them. They kept consumer friendly policies which forced the competition to do the same. I am truly humble by their presence in this great industry and I don't say that lightly.

We have to thank Nintendo for coming up with a CD add-on for SNES, that later would be Sony's venture to the gaming market after the add-on got canceled.

It wasn't really cancelled. Nintendo struck a deal with Phillips instead of Sony to create the infamous CD-I and at that point Sony decided to use the research to create their own gaming system.

Playstation is certainly the best thing that has happened to the videogaming industry by far. It opened so many doors and changed gaming forever. TLOU is the pinnacle of that.

Sony entering the industry was definitely great for the industry. Competition raises the bar. But their is impact is no more significant than Nintendo or Sega because those companies did more innovation. Sony was also more dependent on 3rd parties.

The industry has been better with Sony. But their fans give them too much credit while 3rd parties were really raising the bar in sofware.
