Sony Focusing on PlayStation, Moving Away from TVs and Mobile - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 26 November 2014 / 5,672 Views

After years of losses in both their television and mobile business, Sony will now be moving away from them and focusing on the PlayStation, according to Reuters. Sony has poured billion of dollars to no avail. Sony has now decided to have fewer models of TVs and mobile devices. Sony is now looking to make profits, instead of pushing its way to market leader.

The PlayStation division has been one of the few bright spots for Sony, which has seen losses in the billion of dollars in recent years. The PlayStation has continued to turn a profit. The PlayStation division is expected to grow by 25 percent in the next three years to $13.6 billion.

"We're not aiming for size or market share but better profits," said the newly appointed chief of its mobile division Hiroki Totoki in an investors call.

With the smaller number of models of TVs and mobile devices Sony one expects to make a profit, even if revenue dropped by 30 percent.

Their flagship Xperia Z Series are honestly the best phones I've used. I hope they stay.

Good move. They need to focus on content. Games, music, movies. That is all. No cameras, TVs, PCs... just content.

That would mean no console too. A console is not content. TBH I would have no problem if I could play Uncharted and Microsofts Halo on PC. No need for seperate machines.

Obviously not a regular tower PC but several stylish boxes like the Steambox you can connect to your TV.

Perfect future and games would be cheaper because no publisher has to pay $10 per sold game to the console manufactuere simply to have the game on the system.

They still have their huge movie productions and they all but own Beyonce. They're more or less just trimming the fat in the areas that are hemorrhaging money which makes perfect sense. It a double-edged sword I suppose, but They're way too huge a company to focus on gaming alone.

Well Kaz himself said that they were aiming for market share with PS4 first and foremost. Must've changed their tune

I defiantly hope that they can breakthrough and have good success with the Xperia phones in the mobile market. It really is very important as a electronics company to have a portable mobile division in this day and age. And I really like using the Xperia phones they are the best!

With no better technologies coming to the tv and mobile phones, besides the market saturation, the playstation is a better side. Sony needs to revive those good cancelled games like the Getaway and 8 days.
