Nintendo: No Planned Paid DLC for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS or Wii U - News

Super Smash Bros. game designer Masahiro  talked with VideoGamer about DLC for the game. He stated that Nintendo has no plans to release paid DLC for the Wii U or 3DS version of the game.

"What I can say now about paid DLC is that we aren't working on anything at the moment," said Sakurai. "We’ve put all our efforts into making the actual game. Creating DLC would involve large additional costs and require the involvement of a lot of people. I can't yet give you an answer about whether the price would justify the costs and criticisms mentioned above."

Masahiro does understand the appeal of DLC and how it can add to the overall experience of the game. He itterated that Nintendo has not cut any content from the game to release it later as DLC.

"I understand that DLC could add a lot to the appeal of Smash Bros. and I appreciate that a major part of the excitement for these games come from which characters will appear in the roster, so I think fans could really enjoy DLC that could keep this excitement going," said Sakurai. "However, I think there might be criticism that we are cutting up content to sell characters one by one, or that we are adding things later that should have been there from the start."

"Creating a single fighter involves a huge investment, and we've already been giving it our all and investing a lot of work in the characters currently available in the game and, I think it’s an incredible package in terms of the sheer amount of content in the game," he added. "But it might be that people may not understand and may think that I am not offering enough by just looking at DLC itself."

I personally never liked the idea of DLC. A game is a game. Make another one if you want more. It's encouraging(for me) to know that SSB4 Wii U is the full, complete package when purchasing it at the store. Just like the good ol' days.

I think they mean anything past Mewtwo, obviously Mewtwo could be paid, for but you have the option to get both copies also. But any more characters I think he means they don't have any more DLC planned at the moment, paid or not.

I like the idea of adding fighters and tweaking gameplay in future versions to improve the longevity of the game. So long as the original release still feels "complete", I don't have a problem with it. What Nintendo is doing with MK8 is an excellent example.
