Report: Men Play More MMOs and FPS, Women Play More RPGs and Mobile - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 28 October 2014 / 4,913 Views

SuperData Research has done a study to see which genres of gaming are more popular with men and which are more popular with women. The data was provided to Joystiq that reports 2 out of 3 players of MMOs and FPS are men. That is the biggest difference. Digital console sales is the other data provided that was more male than female.

Mobile gaming had the biggest percent female with 57.8 percent. Women also play more RPGs with 53.6 percent and more PC games, including social games.

"Women are closing the gamer gender gap as they represent two out of five MMO gamers," SuperData said. "Women account for almost half of MMO players, contrary to the stereotyped gamer landscape."

"Players between 18 and 30 account for 50 percent of the US MMO audience. These players represent the largest age group, many of which started playing MMOs as children, during the segment's early years, and have continued into their adulthood. This generation is expected to expand the older markets as they age since they are the first generation to have grown up with MMOs."

I play like a woman. I almost exclusively play RPG's, especially those on my PSP/3DS, and when I do play PC games I often get very addicted to stuff like Sim City.

I guess it makes sense and i see it happening on my MMO community. With that said, i am completely not like that. I pass on almost all shooters because i find them boring. RPG's are more interesting to me.

Guess I am not a man or a woman? Not a fan of any of those genres, well, I do like playing RPGs but I SUCK at them, I can't even beat Pokemon :/
My fav genres are platformer (mario), simulation (animal crossing) and action-adventure (zelda)

No surprise here. I met with a producer of mobile games last week, and he told me that his company makes games for 30+ year old women. They have been successful doing that.

FPS, being played by more men, no shock there. More men playing MMOs, than women, no shock there. I have a rule in MMOs, always assume that the female characters are males, unless otherwise told.

I'm not sure if it's a universal thing, but the info also makes sense from a cultural stand point. FPS's and MMO's tend to be more social and action based, while rpg's offer women the ability to customize their character to their liking, rather than play as your typical male in shooters.

Even if told, don't assume anyone on an MMO is a woman.

Be careful suggesting that genders are different or you'll have Ms Anita breathing down your neck.
