3DS vs DS – VGChartz Gap Charts – September 2014 Update

3DS Vs. DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 1,705,386 - DS

Gap change over last 12 months: 16,691,551 - DS

Total Lead: 29,370,275 – DS

3DS Total Sales: 45,176,172

DS Total Sales: 74,546,447

In the latest month of sales for the 3DS, the gap grew 1,705,386 units in favor of its predecessor the DS.  The DS currently leads by 29,370,275 in the first 45 months. Over the last 12 months the DS has gained 16.69 million units on the 3DS. The gap is expected to continue to grow in favor of the DS.

An important note is that the two handhelds launched at different times of the year. The DS first launched in November 2004, while the 3DS launched in February 2011. The 3DS has sold 45.18 million units in the first 43 months, and the DS 74.55 units.

The chart is backwards. The DS lead is not negative

it has currently been 3 years vs. 7 since the DS launch, and we're more than half way there in regards to matching sales.. The 3DS has some serious legs.. I wonder how NIntendo will decide how to market their new product after the 3DS (predicting showcasing at 2016 E3). Backwards compatibility will probably be a must-have.
