PC RPG Divinity: Original Sin Sales Top 500,000 Units - News

Developer Larian Studios has announced that its turn-based fantasy RPG for the PC Divinity: Original Sin has sold more than 500,000 units since its release.

"It has sold well over half a million units by now– mostly from Steam, with 10% from retail," said boss Swen Vincke.  "'Break even' has been reached, our debts have been paid and we are now in the profitable zone. While not all of the money is for us as we had private investors on board, the game did sufficiently well for us to envision funding our next endeavors with it, meaning we’re pretty happy about its performance."

"So much for turn-based fantasy RPGs not selling, crowdfunding not working and a developer like us not being capable of bringing a game to market without the help of seasoned publishers," Vincke continued.

"The release of [Divinity: Original Sin] was one big crunch period with all the good and bad that come with it," dded Vincke. "If the game ultimately did well, it’s because of the outstanding performance of the team when 'the going got tough and the tough got going.'"

"A lot of the crunch was caused by our decision to listen to the feedback we received through our Kickstarter and Steam Early Access communities. While it often was tough to read through all of the criticism, it was clear that integrating the best parts of the feedback would be well worth the effort and improve the game massively. We didn’t hesitate for a minute."

How did nobody care about GTA V making 1 billion, it was even worldwide news everyone was talking about it. Plus this a small game from small studio not one of the biggest franchises in history.

I really like the game. But...

"So much for turn-based fantasy RPGs not selling, crowdfunding not working and a developer like us not being capable of bringing a game to market without the help of seasoned publishers," Vincke continued.

Well, 500.000 Units is faaar from being a landmark. It's pretty low considering Larian isn't some wacky ukranian backyard studio. What brings us to the next point. Who said crowdfunding won't work? It 's certainly not if some dubious ukranian backyard studio is trying to advertise their game with a letter from Putin. But a studio with a healthy reputation has no problem raising a small sum of a few million bucks. Especially nowadays with Steam/Kickstarter/EarlyAccess as the a direct link to the money source. Nevertheless, there are many who fail, who not even get a tenth of a mil.

And btw. Larian, FIX THAT GODDAMN RESSURECTION-BUG ALREADY!

Making a simplistic assumption of them covering all the costs with their Kickstarter campaign, those 500,000 copies are all profit for them. That's probably not the entire truth but you should get the point.

Awesome, still don't own it but the game looks great and I will buy it when I won#t waste so much time in other games.

I dont get it? Why this is a news? GTA V makes 1 billion and no body cares and 0.5 million copy sold game makes news.
