Report: Nintendo Management Unhappy with Iwata, Looking to Replace Iwata

by William D'Angelo, posted on 05 August 2014 / 7,275 Views

There is unrest within upper management in Nintendo, according to the Japanese website Business Journal and reported by Nintendo Everything. The site claims that Nintendo management is unhappy with President Satoru Iwata refusing to release games on smartphones.

Iwata alone has vetoed demands to release Nintendo IPs on smartphones, according to a Tweet from Nintendo Analist Dr Serkan Toto. Iwata has reiterated that "Nintendo’s strength is in unified development of game hardware and software." He has consistently rejected the idea of smartphones, because they are digital only.

There is also a rumor in the report that managers are looking to get rid of Iwata. Managers who oppose Iwata would want the son of the previous President of Nintendo to become the next President. An insider has stated that there is cultural friction within the company, because Iwata originally came from outside Nintendo.

Iwata made the Wii: 101m sold DS: 153m sold 3DS: 43m sold in 3 years And they are unhappy with him just because ONE console is not doing good?

Untrue, Iwata became president in 2002 during the GameCube era. He had the reigns in the Wii/DS age.

That just one console is going to cost millions. And the 3DS is tracking well behind its predecessor. If that sounds ok you are a delusional fanboy.

I guess you forgot about the N64 and GC failures? Not sure if he was in charge then.

Um this was proven false, nice click bait though.

Jumpin (on 06 August 2014)

I call bullshit on this. Nintendo management works for Iwata, if they were scheming to get rid of him, he could just fire them. Iwata is accountable to shareholders who recently elected him with 81%. The major reason why this seems like bullshit is that no one in Nintendo management seems at all keen on releasing games on mobile. The people who have are a vocal minority among the shareholders.

His only failing with WiiU is what WiiU is called.

Don't want mobile games, but Iwata has messed up in numerous other ways, so I do want him out.

NickK (on 06 August 2014)

I do not like Iwata's current strategy (if he has any) but completely agree that no Nintendo on smartphones. If he is replaced, must be someone that knows Nintendo culture WELL. Just fucking advertise WiiU properly!!!

OmegaRed421 (on 06 August 2014)

Why don't they just create a new publisher and do some mobile games separate from Nintendo.

Clyde32 (on 06 August 2014)

Why not just use those assets to focus on their current systems?

Despite what anyone can tell you, Iwata has done a mediocre job at best. Full of promises and "Please Understand bla bla bla". This rumor aside, I do believe Nintendo needs new leadership.

Devil_Survivor (on 06 August 2014)

Despite the fact he's been in charge under Nintendo's most successful period 2004-2010 right lol? If you think that's mediocre then I think you need to relearn the meaning of that word.

AKA the WiiU is a colossal flop.

Nintentacle (on 05 August 2014)

I don't see rumours of the Xbox president getting replaced...

Iwata gone = the end of rehash of NSMB, Mario Kart, etc.

SirFortesque (on 05 August 2014)

I don't understand why so much hate on mobile Nintendo games, I think something like an Android F2P Pokémon game would make a huge amount of money for Nintendo.

Westman98 (on 05 August 2014)

...and it would kill Nintendo's hardware business
