Weekly Sales Analysis, 19 July - Yokai Watch 2 Remains at the Top

Overview

Overall, hardware sale this week decreased by eight percent. Week-on-week sales is up for the PlayStation 4. Overall year-on-year sales are up by 11 percent. The Wii U and Vita are up year-on-year.

Three gams debuted in the top 30 this week: Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines (PSV) debuted at number two with sales of 92,713 units. The game launched in Japan.

Software milestones this week in the top 30: Watch Dogs (PS4) passed the two million mark. Titanfall (XOne) passed the two million mark.

Worldwide Hardware

 

Hardware home console sales week-on-week is up for the PlayStation 4. PlayStation 4 sales are up by 3,475 (3%) to 117,447 units sold. Wii U sales are down 2,757 (-4%) to 59,173 units sold. The Xbox One sold 57,774 units, a decrease of 2,691 (-4%).  PlayStation 3 sales are down 2,317 (-5%) to 44,781 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are down 2,416 (-7%) to 30,318 units sold. The Wii sold 7,968 units, a decrease of 116 (-1%).

Handheld sales week-on-week is down across the board. The 3DS sold 120,579 units, which is a decrease of 23,437 (-16%). The PlayStation Vita sold 44,969 units, which is down 10,868 (-19%) compared to last week. The PSP is down 698 (-10%) to 6,092 units sold. Total week on week sales are down 41,825 units (-8%) to 489,101 units sold.

The Wii U and Vita are up year-on-year. The PlayStation 3 is down 48,004 (-52%), the Wii is down 14,235 (-64%), the Xbox 360 is down 28,252 (-48%), and the Wii U is up 28,494 (80%). The PSP is down 37,517 (-86%), the Vita is up 13,337 (42%) and the 3DS is down 27,194 (42%). Year on year sales is up by 50,156 units (11%).

 

Home console hardware sales have increased for the PlayStation 4 for one week. Sales have decreased for the Wii U for one week, two weeks for the Xbox 360, three weeks for the PlayStation 3, four weeks for the Xbox One, and eight weeks for the Wii.

The PlayStation 3 has a 54 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 37 percent market share; and the Wii has a nine percent market share. The PlayStation 4 has a 50 percent market share for the eighth generation, the Wii U has a 25 percent market share and the Xbox One has a 25 percent market share. Compared with 10 weeks ago the PlayStation 4, Wii U and Xbox One are up.

 

Handheld hardware sales have decreased for the 3DS and Vita for one week, and six weeks for the PSP.  The Vita has outsold the PSP for 41 straight weeks. The gap between the 3DS and Vita has decreased this week to 76,000 units, from 88,000 units last week.

The 3DS has a 73 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 27 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks the 3DS and Vita are up, while the PSP is down.

Worldwide Software

Three gams debuted in the top 30 this week: Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines (PSV) debuted at number two with sales of 92,713 units. The game launched in Japan.

Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea (PS3) debuted at number six with sales of 46,782. The game launched in Japan.

Gundam Try Age SP (3DS) debuted at number 16 with sales of 23,186. The game launched in Japan.

Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts: Yakai Watch 2 Honke (3DS) is at number one with sales of 286,012. Mario Kart 8 (WiiU) is at number three with sales of 88,465. Minecraft (PS3) is at number four with sales of 58,944. Tomodachi Life (3DS) is at number five with sales of 54,066.

Minecraft (X360) is at number seven with sales of 45,887. Pokémon X/Y (3DS) is at number eight with sales of 40,145. Watch Dogs (PS4) is at number nine with sales of 34,173. FIFA Soccer 14 (PS4) is at number 10 with sales of 31,917.

 

Software home console sales week-on-week is down across the board. The PlayStation 3 sold 827,812 games this week, a decrease of 62,056 units (-7%). The Xbox 360 sold 624,819 games, a decrease of 32,869 units (-5%). The PlayStation 4 sold 252,198 games, a decrease of 52,565 units (-17%). Wii software sales are down 24,311 units (-10%) to 223,680 games sold. The Wii U sold 206,431 games, a decrease of 19,616 (-9%).  The Xbox One sold 131,560 games, a decrease of 24,415 (-16%). 

Handheld software sales week-on-week is up for the Vita. The 3DS sold 661,515 games, which is down 1.06 million units (-62%). The Vita sold 197,719 games, an increase of 61,636 units (45%) week-on-week. DS game sales are down 14,168 units (-7%) to 175,291 games sold.  The PSP sold 54,887 games, a decrease of 10,158 (-16%). Total combined software is down 1.24 million units (-27%) week-on-week to 3.36 million.

Year-on-year software totals are up for the Wii U and Vita. The PlayStation 3 is down 330,943 units (-29%), the Wii is down 172,256 units (-44%), the Xbox 360 is down 334,887 units (-35%), and the Wii U is up 86,549 units (72%). The DS is down 93,684 units (-35%), the PSP is down 67,614 units (-55%), the 3DS is down 63,506 units (-9%), and the Vita is up 121,085 units (158%). Total combined software is down 471,498 units (-12%) games sold year-on-year.

 

Home console software sales have decreased for the Xbox 360 and Wii for two weeks. Sales have decreased for three weeks for the PlayStation 3, four weeks for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and seven weeks for Wii U.

The PlayStation 3 has a 49 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 38 percent market share; and the Wii has a 13 percent market share. The PlayStation 4 has a 43 percent market share for the eighth generation, the Wii U has a 35 percent market share, and the Xbox One has a 22 percent market share.

 

Handheld software sales have increased for the Vita for one week. Sales have decreased for the 3DS for one week, the DS for two weeks and the PSP for seven weeks. The 3DS and DS have remained above their rivals, the Vita and PSP respectively. The 3DS sold more than three times as many games as the Vita. The DS sold more than three times as many games as the PSP.

The DS has a 76 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 24 percent market share. The 3DS has a 77 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 23 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the 3DS and Vita are up.

I hope that with the releases of Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta, Devils the Third and others, WiiU sales get 100k+ again!
