Weekly Sales Analysis, 12 July - Yokai Watch 2 Sells 1.3 Million Units - News

Overview

Overall, hardware sale this week increased by seven percent. Week-on-week sales is up for the Wii U, 3DS, and Vita. Overall year-on-year sales are up by 21 percent. The Wii U, 3DS, and Vita are up year-on-year.

One game debuted in the top 30 this week: Yokai Watch 2 (3DS) debuted at the top of the charts with sales of 1.31 million units. The game launched in Japan.

Software milestones this week in the top 30: Grand Theft Auto V (X360) passed the 14 million mark.

Worldwide Hardware

 Hardware

Hardware home console sales week-on-week is up for the Wii U. PlayStation 4 sales are down by 2,994 (-3%) to 113,972 units sold. Wii U sales are up 3,617 (6%) to 66,531 units sold. The Xbox One sold 61,388 units, a decrease of 5,751 (-9%).  PlayStation 3 sales are down 2,563 (-5%) to 47,098 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are down 2,109 (-6%) to 32,734 units sold. The Wii sold 7,638 units, a decrease of 160 (-2%).

Handheld sales week-on-week is up for the 3DS and Vita. The 3DS sold 154,526 units, which is an increase of 28,138 (22%). The PlayStation Vita sold 55,837 units, which is up 20,340 (57%) compared to last week. The PSP is down 820 (-11%) to 6,790 units sold. Total week on week sales are up 37,698 units (7%) to 546,514 units sold.

The Wii U, 3DS, and Vita are up year-on-year. The PlayStation 3 is down 50,886 (-52%), the Wii is down 14,898 (-66%), the Xbox 360 is down 29,965 (-48%), and the Wii U is up 29,478 (80%). The PSP is down 38,848 (-85%), the Vita is up 22,157 (66%) and the 3DS is up 14,975 (11%). Year on year sales is up by 95,184 units (21%).

 Hardware Home Consoles

Home console hardware sales have increased for the Wii U for one week. Sales have decreased for the Xbox 360 for one week, two weeks for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3, three weeks for the Xbox One, and seven weeks for the Wii.

The PlayStation 3 has a 54 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 37 percent market share; and the Wii has a nine percent market share. The PlayStation 4 has a 47 percent market share for the eighth generation, the Wii U has a 28 percent market share and the Xbox One has a 25 percent market share. Compared with 10 weeks ago the Wii U and Xbox One are up.

 Hardware Handhelds

Handheld hardware sales have increased for the 3DS for four weeks and one week for the Vita. The PSP has decreased for five weeks. The Vita has outsold the PSP for 40 straight weeks. The gap between the 3DS and Vita has increased this week to 99,000 units, from 91,000 units last week.

The 3DS has a 73 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 27 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks the 3DS is up, while the Vita and PSP are down.

Worldwide Software

One game debuted in the top 30 this week: Yokai Watch 2 (3DS) debuted at the top of the charts with sales of 1.31 million units. The game launched in Japan.

Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts: Mario Kart 8 (WiiU) is at number two with sales of 96,022. Minecraft (PS3) is at number three with sales of 63,831. Tomodachi Life (3DS) is at number four with sales of 62,919. Minecraft (X360) is at number five with sales of 48,064.

Watch Dogs (PS4) is at number six with sales of 45,569. Pokémon X/Y (3DS) is at number seven with sales of 41,980. One Piece: Unlimited World Red (PS3) is at number eight with sales of 40,220. Watch Dogs (PS3) is at number nine with sales of 37,249. FIFA Soccer 14 (PS4) is at number 10 with sales of 35,882.

 Software

Software home console sales week-on-week is down across the board. The PlayStation 3 sold 889,868 games this week, a decrease of 85,235 units (-9%). The Xbox 360 sold 657,688 games, a decrease of 74,497 units (-3%). The PlayStation 4 sold 304,763 games, a decrease of 78,696 units (-21%). Wii software sales are down 27,812 units (-10%) to 247,991 games sold. The Wii U sold 226,047 games, a decrease of 19,523 (-8%).  The Xbox One sold 155,975 games, a decrease of 46,436 (-23%). 

Handheld software sales week-on-week is up for the 3DS. The 3DS sold 1.72 million games, which is up 1.28 million units (286%). DS game sales are down 22,496 units (-32%) to 279,591 games sold.  The Vita sold 136,083 games, a decrease of 23,858 units (-15%) week-on-week. The PSP sold 65,045 games, a decrease of 5,146 (-7%). Total combined software is up 893,070 units (24%) week-on-week to 4.60 million.

Year-on-year software totals are up for the Wii U and Vita. The PlayStation 3 is down 594,464 units (-40%), the Wii is down 171,783 units (-41%), the Xbox 360 is down 528,731 units (-45%), and the Wii U is up 27,134 units (14%). The DS is down 90,132 units (-32%), the PSP is down 80,765 units (-55%), the 3DS is up 1.19 million units (286%), and the Vita is down 23,858 units (-15%). Total combined software is up 261,650 units (6%) games sold year-on-year.

 Software Home Consoles

Home console software sales have decreased for the Xbox 360 and Wii for one week. Sales have decreased for two weeks for the PlayStation 3, three weeks for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and six weeks for Wii U.

The PlayStation 3 has a 49 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 37 percent market share; and the Wii has a 14 percent market share. The PlayStation 4 has a 44 percent market share for the eighth generation, the Wii U has a 33 percent market share, and the Xbox One has a 23 percent market share.

 Software Handhelds

Handheld software sales have increased for the 3DS for one week. Sales have decreased for the VPSP for one week, the Vita for two weeks and the PSP for six weeks. The 3DS and DS have remained above their rivals, the Vita and PSP respectively. The 3DS sold more than 12 times as many games as the Vita. The DS sold nearly three times as many games as the PSP.

The DS has a 74 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 26 percent market share. The 3DS has a 93 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a seven percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the 3DS is up.

Dat Youkai Watch boost. The ridiculous jump of the 3DS sales is amazing, i want the game so bad.

God knows how Nintendo do it, but they are definitely doing it right. Problem with companies in Japan is their software is pretty poor while 3DS and even Vita sometimes has the most appealing games. No wonder home consoles isn't performing well there, but back to subject. Great to see some consoles doing well, but I think clearly Nintendo has the right idea if they can do so well just like that.
