Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10. As a note all sales figures are retail only.
This week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling PlayStation 3 games (2014 update). Last week we looked at the top 10 selling Xbox 360 games (2014 update), and the week before that the top 10 selling games in April 2014.
Looking at the top 10 selling PlayStation 3 games (2014 update), one game were released in 2008, one in 2009, two in 2010, two in 2011, two in 2012, and two in 2013.
The top 10 selling PlayStation 3 games have sold 104.24 million units. The top selling game, Grand Theft Auto V, sold more than 15 million units. The top seven titles sold more than 10 million units and the entire top 10 sold more than six million units.
When you break it down by publisher there is one first party title and nine third party titles. There are five titles published by Activision, two by Take-Two, and two by Electronic Arts.
The one Sony title sold 10.83 million units or 10.4 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The five Activision titles sold a combined 53.09 million units or 50.9 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Take-Two titles sold a combined 26.42 million units or 25.3 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Electronic Arts titles sold a combined 13.9 million units or 13.4 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.
When you break it down by franchise there are five Call of Duty titles and two Grand Theft Auto titles. The five Call of Duty titles sold 53.09 million units. The two Grand Theft Auto titles sold 26.42 million units.
Side note: There have been 1,261,205 PlayStation 3’s sold in 2014 through May 31. The PlayStation 3 has sold 82.06 million units lifetime. There have also been 29.51 million games sold for the PlayStation 3 in 2014. There have been 796.30 million games sold lifetime for the PlayStation 3.
Broken down by publisher Electronic Arts has sold the most games for the PlayStation 3 with 140.21 million games sold. Sony has sold 124.27 million games, Activision 1303.03 million games, Take-Two 63.32 million games, and Ubisoft 55.47 million games.
