Weekly Sales Analysis, 10 May - MLB 14 The Show (PS4), Borderlands 2 (PSV)

Overview

Overall, hardware sale this week decreased by six percent. Week-on-week sales are up for the PlayStation 4. Overall year-on-year sales are down by six percent. The Wii U and Vita are both up year-on-year.

Three games debuted in the top 30 this week.  MLB 14 The Show (PS4) debuted at number one with sales of 154,807. The game launched in North America.

There are no software milestones this week in the top 30.

Worldwide Hardware

 Hardware

Hardware home console sales week-on-week is up for the PlayStation 4. PlayStation 4 sales are up 3,145 (3%) to 123,737 units sold. Xbox One sales are down 3,868 (-7%) to 52,903 units sold. PlayStation 3 sales are down 3,890 (-9%) to 41,571 units sold. The Wii U sold 30,413 units, a decrease of 924 (-3%). Xbox 360 sales are down 666 (-2%) to 26,156 units sold. The Wii sold 8,680 units, a decrease of 683 (-7%).

Handheld sales week-on-week is down across the board. The 3DS sold 101,721 units, which is a decrease 8,330 (-10%). The PlayStation Vita sold 32,691 units, which is down 9,249 (-22%) compared to last week. The PSP is down 1,262 (-10%) to 11,016 units sold. Total week on week sales are down 25,727 units (-6%) to 428,888 units sold.

The Wii U is up year-on-year. The PlayStation 3 is down 69,106 (-62%), the Wii is down 19,518 (-69%), the Xbox 360 is down 38,832 (-60%), and the Wii U is up 5,313 (21%). The PSP is down 39,867 (-78%), the Vita is up 961 (3%) and the 3DS is down 28,557 (-22%). Year on year sales are down 29,305 units (-6%).

 Hardware Home Consoles

Home console hardware sales have increased for the PlayStation 4 for one week. Sales have decreased for one week for the Wii U, and three weeks for the Wii, and Xbox 360. The Xbox One has decreased for four weeks and six weeks for the PlayStation 3.

The PlayStation 3 has a 55 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 34 percent market share; and the Wii has an 11 percent market share. The PlayStation 4 has a 60 percent market share for the eighth generation, the Xbox One has a 26 percent market share and the Wii U has a 14 percent market share.

 Hardware Handhelds

Handheld hardware sales have decreased for the 3DS and Vita for one week and two weeks for the Vita.  The Vita has outsold the PSP for 31 straight weeks. The gap between the 3DS and Vita has increased this week to 69,000 units, from 68,000 units last week.

The 3DS has a 76 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 24 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks all three handhelds are down.

Worldwide Software

Three games debuted in the top 30 this week.  MLB 14 The Show (PS4) debuted at number one with sales of 154,807. The game launched in North America.

Borderlands 2 (PSV) debuted at number four with sales of 48,711. The game launched in North America.

Bound of Flame (PS4) debuted at number 20 with sales of 22,251. The game launched in Europe and North America.

Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts: Minecraft (X360) is at number two with sales of 62,669. Youkai Watch (3DS) is at number three with sales of 59,073. Titanfall (XOne) is at number five with sales of 47,718.  

 Kirby: Triple Deluxe (3DS) is at number six with sales of 47,596. Pokemon X/Y (3DS) is at number seven with sales of 42,481. Mario Golf: World Tour (3DS) is at number eight with sales of 41,319. Titanfall (X360) is at number nine with sales of 32,956. Grand Theft Auto V (PS3) is at number 10 with sales of 32,155.

 Software

Software home console sales week-on-week is up for the PlayStation 4 and Vita.  The PlayStation 3 sold 853,337 games, a decrease of 53,143 units (-6%).  The Xbox 360 sold 750,253 games this week, a decrease of 43,901 units (-6%). The PlayStation 4 sold 435,641 games, an increase of 119,182 units (38%). Wii software sales are down 13,008 units (-5%) to 262,411 games sold. The Wii U sold 165,886 games, a decrease of 18,963 (-10%). The Xbox One sold 161,839 games, an increase of 25,026 (-13%).

Handheld software sales week-on-week is up for the Vita. The 3DS sold 528,433 games, which down 135,668 units (-20%). The DS sold 197,815 games, a decrease of 13,813 units (-7%) week-on-week. Vita game sales are up 15,397 units (10%) to 172,800 games sold. The PSP sold 65,701 games, a decrease of 4,144 (-6%). Total combined software is down 173,087 units (-5%) week-on-week to 3.59 million.

Year-on-year software totals is up for the Wii U, and Vita. The PlayStation 3 is down 151,038 units (-15%), the Wii is down 186,214 units (-42%), the Xbox 360 is down 130,116 units (-15%), and the Wii U is up 72,697 units (78%). The DS is down 98,083 units (-33%), the PSP is down 36,867 units (-36%), the 3DS is down 29,432 units (-5%), and the Vita is up 75,766 units (78%). Total combined software is up 114,193 units (3%) games sold year-on-year.

 Software Home Consoles

Home console software sales have increased for the PlayStation 4 for one week. Sales have decreased for one week for the Wii U, three weeks for the PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, four weeks for the Xbox One and six weeks for the Wii.

The PlayStation 3 has a 46 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 40 percent market share; and the Wii has a 14 percent market share. The PlayStation 4 has a 57 percent market share for the eighth generation, the Wii U has a 22 percent market share, and the Xbox One has a 21 percent market share.

 Software Handhelds

Handheld software sales have increase for the Vita for one week. Sales have decreased for the 3DS for one week, and six weeks for the DS and PSP. The 3DS and DS have remained above their rivals, the Vita and PSP respectively. The 3DS sold more than three times more games than the Vita. The DS sold three times as many games as the PSP.

The DS has a 75 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 25 percent market share. The 3DS has a 75 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 25 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all four handhelds are down.
