Weekly Sales Analysis, 22 March - inFAMOUS: Second Son Boosts PS4 Sales 67%

Overview

Overall, hardware sale this week increased by nine percent. Week-on-week sales is up for the Wii U, PlayStation 4, 3DS, and PlayStation Vita. Overall year-on-year sales are up by five percent. The Wii U is the only platform up year-on-year.

Six games debuted in the top 30 this week.  inFAMOUS: Second Son (PS4) debuted at the top of the charts with sales of 695,304. The game launched in North America and Europe.

Software milestones this week in the top 30: Titanfall (XOne) topped the one million mark; and Call of Duty: Ghosts (PS4) passed the two million mark.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware 

Hardware home console sales week-on-week is up just for the Wii U and PlayStation 4. PlayStation 4 sales are up 88,298 (67%) to 220,349 units sold. Xbox One sales are down 42,644 (-27%) to 112,513 units sold. PlayStation 3 sales are down 1,371 (-2%) to 61,477 units sold. Wii U sales are up 2,559 (7%) to 39,376 units sold. The Xbox 360 sold 29,371 units, a decrease of 2,848 (-9%). The Wii sold 9,281 units, a decrease of 399 (-4%).

Handheld sales week-on-week is up for the 3DS and Vita. The 3DS sold 120,699 units, which is up 4,020 (3%) week-on-week. The PlayStation Vita sold 65,434 units which is up 9,377 (17%) compared to last week. The PSP is down 1,274 (-10%) to 12,044 units sold. Total week on week sales are up 55,718 units (9%) to 669,173 units sold.

The Vita is up year-on-year. The PlayStation 3 is down 91,474 (-60%), the Wii is down 25,065 (-73%), the Xbox 360 is down 70,038 (-70%), and the Wii U is down 14,514 (-27%). The PSP is down 48,258 (-80%), the Vita is up 528 (1%) and the 3DS is down 35,882 (-23%). Year on year sales are up 30,130 units (5%).

 Hardware Home Consoles

Home console hardware sales have increased for the PlayStation 4 and Wii U for one week. Sales have decreased for the Xbox One for one week, the PlayStation 3 for two weeks, and the Xbox 360, Wii and PlayStation 3 have decreased for five straight weeks.

The PlayStation 3 has a 61 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 30 percent market share; and the Wii has a nine percent market share. The PlayStation 4 has a 59 percent market share for the eighth generation, the Xbox One has a 30 percent market share and the Wii U has an 11 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are up.

 Hardware Handhelds

Handheld hardware sales have increased for the 3DS and Vita for one week and decreased for the PSP for three weeks.  The Vita has outsold the PSP for 24 straight weeks. The gap between the 3DS and Vita has decreased this week to 55,000 units, from 61,000 units last week.

The 3DS has a 65 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 35 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks the Vita is up, while the 3DS and PSP are down.

Worldwide Software

Six games debuted in the top 30 this week.  inFAMOUS: Second Son (PS4) debuted at the top of the charts with sales of 695,304. The game launched in North America and Europe.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS4) debuted at number two with sales of 433,118. The PlayStation 3 version debuted at number four with sales of 228,431. The Xbox One version debuted at number 12 with sales of 88,931. The Xbox 360 version debuted at number 24 with sales of 37,604. The game launched worldwide.

Sengoku Musou 4 (PS3) debuted at number seven with sales of 130,768. The Vita version debuted at number 20 thanks with sales of 40,843. The game launched in Japan.

J-Stars Victory Vs. (PS3) debuted at number eight with sales of 118,722. The Vita version debuted at number 11 with sales of 95,591. The game launched in Japan.

Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2014 (PS3) debuted at number 13 with sales of 66,299. The Vita version debuted at number 30 with sales of 29,978. The game launched in Japan.

Game Center CX: 3-Chuome no Arino (PS3) debuted at number 25 with sales of 32,490. The game launched in Japan.

Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts: Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster (PS3) is at number three with sales of 331,803. Titanfall (XOne) is at number five with sales of 208,439.

Mario Party Island Tour (3DS) is at number six with sales of 143,549. Dark Souls II (PS3) is at number nine with sales of 110,016. Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster (PSV) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 98,798.

 Software

Software home console sales week-on-week is up for the PlayStation 3, Wii and PlayStation 4.  The PlayStation 3 sold 2.04 million games, an increase of 326,715 units (19%).  The PlayStation 4 sold 1.36 million games this week, an increase of 1.13 million units (495%). Xbox 360 software sales are down 135,717 units (-12%) to 952,989 games sold. The Xbox One sold 447,657 games, a decrease of 628,384 units (-58%). The Wii sold 337,554 games, an increase of 2,094 (1%).  The Wii U sold 176,303 games, a decrease of 21,889 (-11%).

Handheld software sales week-on-week is up for the PSP, Vita, and 3DS. The 3DS sold 682,382 games, which up 121,447 units (234%). The Vita sold 411,784 games, an increase of 288,435 units (234%) week-on-week. DS game sales are down 7,478 units (-3%) to 257,860 games sold. The PSP sold 113,752 games, an increase of 34,733 (44%). Total combined software is up 1.11 million units (20%) week-on-week to 6.78 million.

Year-on-year software totals is up for the PlayStation 3 and Vita. The PlayStation 3 is up 55,111 units (3%), the Wii is down 192,589 units (-36%), the Xbox 360 is down 1.00 million units (-51%), and the Wii U is down 115,380 units (-40%). The DS is down 106,185 units (-29%), the PSP is down 111,932 units (-50%), the 3DS is down 180,020 units (-21%), and the Vita is up 155,466 units (-21%). Total combined software is up 307,284 units (20%) games sold year-on-year.

 Software Home Consoles

Home console software sales have increased for the PlayStation 3 for two weeks, and one week for the PlayStation 4 and Wii. The Xbox One has decreased for one week, the Wii U has decreased for four weeks and the Xbox 360 has decreased for five weeks.

The PlayStation 3 has a 61 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 29 percent market share; and the Wii has a 10 percent market share. The PlayStation 4 has a 69 percent market share for the eighth generation, the Xbox One has a 23 percent market share, and the Wii U has a nine percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 are up.

 Software Handhelds

Handheld software sales have increased for the 3DS for two weeks and one week for the Vita and PSP. DS software sales have decreased for one week. The 3DS and DS have remained above their rivals, the Vita and PSP respectively. The 3DS sold 66% more games than the Vita. The DS sold more than two times as many games as the PSP.

The DS has a 69 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 31 percent market share. The 3DS has a 62 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has an 38 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the DS, PSP, and Vita are up.
