Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10. As a note all sales figures are retail only.
This week the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature returns with a look at the top 10 selling PlayStation 4 games in 2013. Over the next couple of months we will be taking a look at the rest of the gaming platforms sales in 2013, as well as the top 10 selling games by region.
The PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013 and the entire top 10 consists of launch titles. The console had the biggest launch in gaming history when you combine North America and Europe, which saw releases two weeks apart.
In less than two months the top 10 selling games sold 8.86 million units, with five titles already selling more than one million units. The top seven titles topped 500,000 units sold, while the entire top 10 sold more than 300,000 units.
When you break it down by publisher there are two first party titles, published by Sony, and eight third party titles. There are four titles published by Electronic Arts, one by Activision, one by Ubisoft, and one by Warner Bros. The two Sony games sold a combined 1.68 million units or 19 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The four Electronic Arts titles sold a combined 3.51 million units or 39.6 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.
The top 10 selling PlayStation 4 in 2013 as a graph does a good job at showing the dominance of shooters. Three of the top four titles are shooters and only one of them is an exclusive. The three games sold a combined 3.99 million units or 45 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.
Side note: There were 4.40 million PlayStation 4’s sold in 2013, with 9.39 million games sold. There were 16 games available for the console at retail.
Electronic Arts sold the most games for the platform with 3.58 million units. Activision managed to sell 1.73 million games, Sony 1.68 million games, Ubisoft 1.30 million games, Take-Two 0.60 million games, and Warner Bros. 0.49 million games.
