Weekly Sales Analysis, 14 December - Puzzle & Dragons Z (3DS)

Overview

Overall, hardware sale this week increased by 31 percent. Week-on-week sales is up across the board. Overall year-on-year sales are down by 18 percent and no platforms are up year-over-year. The DS has the biggest drop at 85 percent.

One game debuted in the top 30 this week: Puzzle & Dragons Z (3DS) debuted at number two with sales of 540,821. The game launched in Japan.

Software milestones this week in the top 30: Pokémon X/Y (3DS) passed the eight million mark; Grand Theft Auto V (PS3) passed the 15 million mark; Gran Turismo 6 (PS3) passed the one million mark; Super Mario 3D World (WiiU) passed the one million mark; The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (3DS) passed the one million mark; Battlefield 4 (X360) passed the two million mark; and Skylanders Swap Force (Wii) passed the one million mark.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware 

Hardware home console sales week-on-week is up across the board. PlayStation 4 sales are up 106,473 (40%) to 374,879 units sold. PlayStation 3 sales are up 63,303 (21%) to 370,022 units sold. Xbox One sales are up 48,150 (19%) to 306,436 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are up 100,143 (50%) to 299,741 units sold.  The Wii U sold 264,627 units, an increase of 91,298 (53%). The Wii sold 99,935 units, an increase of 24,160 (32%).

Handheld sales week-on-week is up across the board. The 3DS sold 899,915 units, which is up 207,136 (30%) week-on-week. The PlayStation Vita sold 135,046 units which is up 21,130 (19%) compared to last week. The PSP is up 8,751 (13%) to 76,708 units sold. The DS is up 4,945 (25%) to 24,487 units sold. Total week on week sales are up 675,390 units (31%) to 2,851,796 million units sold.

No platform is up year-on-year. The PlayStation 3 is down 253,625 (-41%), the Wii is down 190,896 (-66%), the Xbox 360 is down 425,134 (-59%), and the Wii U is down 74,569 (-22%). The PSP is down 86,410 (-53%), the DS is down 135,494 (-85%), the Vita is down 24,345 (-15%) and the 3DS is down 125,303 (-12%). Year on year sales are down 633,461 units (-18%).

 Hardware Home Consoles

Home console hardware sales have increased for every platform for one week. The Wii U has outsold the Wii for 13 straight weeks. The Xbox One has outsold the Xbox 360 for two weeks. The PlayStation 4 has outsold the PlayStation 3 for one week.

The PlayStation 3 has a 48 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 39 percent market share; and the Wii has a 13 percent market share. The PlayStation 4 has a 40 percent market share for the eighth generation, The Xbox One has a 32 percent market share and the Wii U has a 28 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, and Wii U are up.

 Hardware Handhelds

Handheld hardware sales have increased for the PSP for seven weeks and the DS, 3DS, and Vita for one week. The Vita has outsold the PSP for 10 straight weeks. The gap between the 3DS and Vita has increased this week to 765,000 units, from 579,000 units last week.

The PSP has a 76 percent market share this week for the seventh generation handhelds, while the DS has a 24 percent market share. The 3DS has an 87 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 13 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks all four handhelds are up.

Worldwide Software

One game debuted in the top 30 this week: Puzzle & Dragons Z (3DS) debuted at number two with sales of 540,821. The game launched in Japan.

Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts:  Call of Duty: Ghosts (X360) is at number one with sales of 550,854. Call of Duty: Ghosts (PS3) is at number three with sales of 495,843. Pokémon X/Y (3DS) is at number four with sales of 451,019. Just Dance 2014 (Wii) is at number five with sales of 434,064.

Grand Theft Auto V (PS3) is at number six with sales of 404,981. Grand Theft Auto V (X360) is at number seven with sales of 391,939. Gran Turismo 6 (PS3) is at number eight with sales of 374,864. Super Mario 3D World (WiiU) is at number nine with sales of 285,056. FIFA Soccer 14 (PS3) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 239,782.

 Software

Software home console sales week-on-week is up across the board. The PlayStation 3 sold 6.99 million games, an increase of 839,463 units (14%).  The Xbox 360 sold 6.61 million games this week, an increase of 1.40 million units (27%). Wii software sales are up 662,452 units (28%) to 3.02 million games sold. The Wii U sold 1.40 million games, an increase of 418,335 units (42%).  The PlayStation 4 sold 1.00 million games, an increase of 98,502 (11%). The Xbox One sold 818,064 games, an increase 208,118 units.

Handheld software sales week-on-week is up across the board. The 3DS sold 3.42 million games, which is up 1.10 million units (4%). The DS sold 1.62 million games, an increase of 499,846 units (45%) week-on-week. Vita game sales are up 118,936 units (35%) to 461,217 games sold. The PSP sold 457,537 games, an increase of 112,627 (33%). Total combined software is up 5.46 million units (27%) week-on-week to 23.14 million.

Year-on-year software totals are up for the PlayStation 3, Wii U, 3DS, and PSP. The PlayStation 3 is up 414,769 units (6%), the Wii is down 2.33 million units (-43%), the Xbox 360 is down 1.36 million units (-17%), and the Wii U is up 696,552 units (98%). The DS is down 933,254 units (-46%), the PSP is up 21,102 units (5%), the 3DS is up 848,172 units (33%), and the Vita is down 85,763 units (-16%). Total combined software is down 937,670 units (-4%) games sold year-on-year.

 Software Home Consoles

Home console software sales have increased for the Wii for nine weeks, the PlayStation 3 for three weeks, and the Xbox 360, Wii U, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 for one week.

The PlayStation 3 has a 42 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 40 percent market share; and the Wii has an 18 percent market share. The Wii U has a 44 percent market share for the eighth generation, the PlayStation 4 has a 31 percent market share, and the Xbox One has a 25 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all four home consoles are up.

 Software Handhelds

DS software sales have increased for 11 weeks and the 3DS for five weeks. The PSP and Vita have both increased for one week. The 3DS and DS have remained above their rivals, the Vita and PSP respectively. The 3DS sold more than seven times as many games as the Vita. The DS sold more than three times as many games as the PSP.

The DS has a 78 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 22 percent market share. The 3DS has an 88 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 12 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the DS, Vita, and PSP are up, while the 3DS is down.

PS4 doesn't look good in pink. Doesn't it make more sense to have PS4 Blue, XBO Green, and WiiU light blue - like the case colours? Maybe make the old Wii Purple, and then this looks 10x better. As for 3DS :-/ Was really hoping it would be up YoY.

wow 28,12mln GTA V copies sell in 2 platforms and remember without digital sells:D I think with digital now game could sell 32 million copies. In VGC we still have 2 weeks to end of year, and there will be christmast time so 1-2 mln copies more:D
