Welcome to the VGChartz Gap charts. The charts will be updated monthly and each article will focus on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation, as well as comparing the 8th generation consoles.

The chart comparing the two consoles will be added next month.

PS4 Vs. PS3 Global:

Gap change in latest month: 1,704,289 – PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: n/a

Total Lead: 1,704,289 – PS4

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 2,099,126

PlayStation 3 Total Sales: 394,937

This is the first month of the PlayStation 4 on stores shelves and it has taken an early lead on its predecessor when you align the launches. The PlayStation 4 sold 1,704,189 more units in its first month than the PlayStation 3 did. The PlayStation 4 sold 2,099,126 units in its first month, while the PlayStation 3 sold just 394,937 units.

Both consoles launched in November. The PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013.

Well PS4 was a world wide launch, and the ps3 launched later in Europe. The PS3 sold over 700k in the first 4 weeks in Europe, so these numbers paint kind of the wrong image. No denying the PS4 is selling way better though.

700K in 48H and not 4 weeks, PS4 was released in Europe on November 29, and 2.1 millions sold on Dec. 1 WW.

Wow, PS4 and XBO are opening up to much stronger sales then the PS3/360 did. I wonder, are both consoles just opening strong because of how long the PS3/360 gen was, or will this gen sell a lot more in general?
