Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10. As a note all sales figures are retail only.

Top 10 Selling DS Games

This week we will be looking at the top 10 selling DS games. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling games in 2009 and the week before that the top 10 selling games in September 2013.

Looking at the top 10 bestselling DS games, one came out in 2004, five in 2005, two in 2006, one in 2009 and one in 2010. Seven of the games were released from September to December.

The top 10 bestselling DS games have sold a combined 177.64 million units. New Super Mario Bros., Nintendogs, Mario Kart DS, and Brain Age all sold more than 20 million units. The entire top 10 sold more than 10 million units.

When you break it down by franchise there are three Pokémon titles, three titles that have Mario in it, as well as two Brain Age titles. The three Pokémon games, Diamond / Pearl, Black / White, and Heart Gold / Soul Silver, sold a combined 44.24 million units 24.9 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

The three Mario games, New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart DS and Super Mario 64, sold a combined 61.71 million units or 34.7 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Brain Age games sold a combined 35.27 million units or 19.9 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

 Top 10 Selling DS Games

The top 10 selling DS games as a graph really shows established Nintendo franchises helped push DS sales to set a new record for a dedicated gaming handheld. Seven of the top 10 games are from Nintendo franchises that have been around for years.

Here are the sales figures outside the top 10: The top 17 games sold more than five million units and the top 53 games sold more than two million units. The top 124 games sold more than one million units and the top 256 games sold more than 500,000 units.

Nintendo has sold 153,674,086 million DS’s to date. There have also been 765,424,574 games sold for the DS.

Nintendo accounts for 43.6 percent of the total games sold for the DS. Nintendo has sold 333,707,042 games for the DS to date. No other publisher has sold 100 million games for the DS.

Ubisoft has sold 53,131,894 games for the DS, Activision sold 40,163,292 games, Disney sold 33,482,063 games, THQ sold 32,531,779 games and Electronic Arts sold 30,741,553 games.

When you sell 20.03m copies and are 'only' fourth, you know what behemoths are above you. The only system ever to have had ten 10m-sellers, amazing accomplishment. I have four of those games; NSMB, MKDS, BA2 and SM64.

Ten 10 million sellers, 7 different franchises all owned by the same company, and people say they need more franchises.
