UK Retailer: Xbox One to Outsell PlayStation 4

by William D'Angelo, posted on 10 October 2013 / 12,408 Views

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will be launching one week apart this November. They are both expected to have shortages this year. Jonathan Marsh, a Head Technology Buyer at major UK retailer John Lewis this week, has told Trusted Reviews that he expects the Xbox One to outsell the PlayStation 4. The features he believes will appeal more to customers.

"We are expecting more interest in the Xbox One," Marsh said. "We are stocking both the PS4 and the Xbox One but if we were to back one, we are thinking that Xbox One will appeal a bit more to our customers in terms of the experience it creates."

"The software that the Xbox One launches with will really appeal to our customer base based on what we've experienced in the past," Marsh added.

The Xbox One will launch on November 22 in North America and Europe. The PlayStation 4 will launch in North America on November 15 and Europe on November 29.

This is his opinion based on what he knows about the buying trends of his customer base. Maybe he's right about the Xbox One outselling the PS4 at John Lewis. However, I doubt that the Xbox One will do better in the UK as a whole. If you look at Amazon UK's year to date bestsellers charts, the PS4 has one SKU at 4th place, while the Xbox One has two SKU's at 33rd and 56th place. Unfortunately, there's no way to add up the total preorders for both of Xbox One's SKU's to see how it stacks up against the PS4, but based on the hourly sales charts for the last few weeks when I've checked them, PS4 games are tracking ahead of Xbox One games by several places on average, so the PS4 is likely more popular in the UK. However, the Xbox One is doing better on Amazon UK's charts than it is on Amazon France's and Amazon Germany's charts, though not quite as good as the Xbox One is doing on Amazon US's charts.

Would love for some journalist to ask simple questions like... why cant you actually pre-order either next gen consoles on your website. I dont see many people going into JL and actually pre-ordering it.

On another note, I was told in a local store near me (not JL) they had 24 PS4 and 7 XboxOne pre-orders (from a very reliable source)... it's not the first time i've heard this type of thing. Dont see the PS4 being undersold, and that one analyst saying the PS4 will be outsold 3:1 well he needs eggs throwing at him :)

It's hard to go on local retailers. I've heard people say that their local retailers are seeing 3 times as many PS4 preorders, I've heard people say the exact oppositie, that the Xbox One was leading at their local retailer. Based on what I'm seeing on various preorder charts including here on VGchartz and some of Amazon's country specific best sellers charts, and Sony's claim that the PS4 passed 1 million preorders back in August, I'd guess that the PS4 has about 1.2-1.3 million preorders right now, and that the Xbox One has about 800-900 thousand preorders right now. However, it's not all bad news for the Xbox, with the Wii U doing poorly (falling behind all 3 last gen consoles in sales during the same time period so far), and the fact that the Xbox One is outpreordering both the Xbox 360 and the original Xbox, it's looking like Microsoft could actually gain some marketshare this generation, even if it is likely to be 2nd place behind the PS4.

The vast majority of sources reports PS4 leading in preorders. Anyway, variance can be very high for shops with sales numbers not high as the biggest chains, not to mention that some shops and chains can cater to audiences different from average. So what that retailer said can be tru for its shops without contradicting a different general trend.
This said, we can also expect XBOne to be stronger than the EU average in UK.

@shikamaru: yes, the most important and positive thing for both MS and Sony is that even the one that will be second will have excellent sales (at least initially, as preorders and early adopters can't tell us many things about long term, but having a great start is always better than not, anyway)

In France there's always been a split of 67/33 in favor of PS3, and PS4 seems even stronger, I think Microsoft already lost this gen, even if US and UK tend to slightly prefer Xbox One... or Microsoft needs a real killer game to invert the trend ! Maybe a great Kinect game ?

(1) All the polls say 90% in favor of PS4 (2) Gamestop has twice as many PS4 pre-orders (3) I don't know anyone personally getting XBox one at launch (4) Almost no teens or young adults have cable anymore, we are a generation of cord cutters. (5) X1's best rated exclusive is on PC with free online play (6) No free games on xbox live (7) every feature paywalled on X1 except single player game and watching blu ray. - Yeah I'm sure xbox will be more popular LMAO

Isn't John Lewis a more upscale retailer along the lines of Dillard's and Macy's? If so, it's not likely to be the typical place the average consumer would buy video games at. I don't know about the UK specifically, but Europe as a whole has always been "PlayStation Country." The PS3 always outsold the 360 in the region, and passed it in LTD sales back in 2009. And let's not forget that the 360 had the advantages of having a lower price and a one-year head start. Now that the PS4 is the one that costs less and neither system has head start, things will probably look even more favorable for Sony in Europe. At Amazon UK, the PS4 is currently ranked #5 and the XBO at #25 (this is for the top-ranked SKUs), and shikamaru317 already posted how they rank amongst the best-selling items of the year so far. Among software titles, the PS4 version of every multiplatform title has been trending ahead of the PS4 version. As of this hour, here's where the some of the big third-party titles are sitting at Amazon UK: COD Ghosts: #24 (PS4), #70 (XBO) Destiny: #32 (PS4), #54 (XBO) Watch Dogs: #34 (PS4), #165 (XBO) Battlefield 4: #36 (PS4), #89 (XBO) Assassin's Creed IV: #65 (PS4), #277 (XBO) The highest-ranked XBO port is Destiny, which is nine spots ahead of the lowest-ranked PS4 port (ACIV), and the only reason Destiny has shot up in the ranks like it has is because pre-ordering it gets you into the beta early next year. As for games in the Top 100 best-selling video game items of the year so far, the only next-gen software releases in the list are the PS4 versions of Watch Dogs (#69), Ghosts (#72), and Battlefield 4 (#93). Of course, Amazon UK is just a single retailer, and when we finally have an account of total UK sales, it may or may not be that lopsided in the PS4's favor and it could end up being a close fight, but these numbers do indicate that there's more interest for the PS4 in the UK right now.

Hm. Apparently you can't have line breaks in replies to news articles. That should not have been a single block of text.

The UK is mainly Xbox, Europe is PS

Y'know, I completely forgot that in the yearly charts VGC actually shows separate totals for the UK, France, and Germany in addition to Europe as a whole (I usually use the hardware sales graphs under the "Tools" tab). Looks like in the UK the 360 is at 9 million while the PS3 is at 6 million. That's a 3:2 ratio. In the U.S., where the 360 has sold 41.1 million and the PS3 has sold 25 million, a 3.29:1 ratio. Of course, the dynamics of the eighth generation are different, with both the PS4 and XBO coming out at the same time and the PS4 costing less, so it's possible that it might be a closer match-up, with the PS4 possibly coming out on top this time. We'll know for sure by year's end when we have a decent number of systems sold to start to get a decent picture.

I've been surprised at the amount of people I've met in real life who are getting an Xbox One. I spend a fair bit of time reading opinions etc on game sites - and that would seem to indicate otherwise - but the type of people I've been speaking too are gamers - but not the kind who read/post on gaming sites regularly. The kind of guys who play online games regularly, value their gamertag/friendlist - but don't post on multiple sites about it. If opinions on gaming sites reflected real life - the Vita would be selling a ton every month - and COD would struggle to break a million sales, with BF selling 6 times the amount. A few points to consider - 1) Sony launching in more territories. MS have focused on their larger fanbase markets. That means, while Sony may have allocated machines for Poland (as an example) - MS are selling those machines in the UK/USA - where they have a larger marketshare and are more likely to be purchased. Say both companies have 6 million allocated for launch day - worldwide - if Sony, for example have 1 million allocated for UK, and MS have 1.5 million - it's quite possible MS will sell more in the UK in that period. 2)Specs vs Games - A lot of people make their console purchasing decision based purely on games, not specs. Look at PS2 - weakest hardware of its generation + largest range of popular/established games/IP's = victory. Sony launching with one established/successful exclusive IP/title - Killzone, MS launching with three - Forza/DeadRising/KillerInstinct. That said - I don't know if I necessarily agree with the guy in the article - but it's probably unfair to dismiss him out of hand. He may also have some insight into how many units each company is allocating for launch in the UK.

No one in EU will buy the Xbone after the DRM disaster.

RoadShow (on 11 October 2013)

Xbox One will sell okay but it will never see the #1 spot, probably not in any region. Perhaps a month here or there when Halo launches or something but world wide and yearly per region xbox will always be a #2.

I can't wait for 2 months from now buddy! All my personal friends I fought all generation with so hard against 360 have finally seen the light. Not 1 of them is getting an Xbox. All are going with PS4 and some are considering xbox later down the road.

Because anyone in the uk buys consoles at john lewis and thier rediculous prices right?

Homeroids (on 10 October 2013)

I'm not from the UK but if you check the John Lewis website and do a search on Xbox One you can see it for order. If you do a search on PS4, nothing comes up in the search. This tells me one of 2 things: 1. John Lewis is no longer taking pre-orders of PS4 because they have no more allocated stock. Therefore John Lewis needs to promote the allocated stock of Xbox One since that is still available. 2. John Lewis is not taking pre-orders of PS4 at all. That would be odd.

Madword (on 10 October 2013)

I suspect Sony probably havent even given them any consoles to sell (I mean who buys a console from JL... no one)... so of course they will promote XboxOne if they have stock of it :) though saying that..- if you look at their website you cannot even find a PS4/XboxOne on it. No wonder they are having trouble selling PS4 for pre-orders.

fireburn95 (on 10 October 2013)

John lewis sell consoles lol? Well PS4 is higher pre ordered on Amazon UK (Largest retailer i reckon) so this seems like a fanboyish statement

y2jarmyofficial (on 10 October 2013)

amazon top 100 has shown x1 ahead of ps4,infact ps4 was gone out of the top 100 for months till today

The PS4 and Wii U DOMINATE Xbox One.

At John Lewis maybe but at everywhere else I doubt it.

Do we really need this crap on this site...? A buyer has some thoughts...? Lmao.

This is only his opinion based on his preference (and please, look at the website, full of microsoft )

avrwc2 (on 11 October 2013)

If I lived in Europe I'd stay away from the likes of Microsoft and any US company that jumped in bed with the NSA. Remember, Microsoft was not only the FIRST to join the NSA surveillance, they OFFERED the encryption keys and the backdoor keys to Outlook, Skype and everything they had to the gov't before the gov't even asked. And now they come up with the XB1 that has mandatory Kinect bundle? Yeah, sure, you can turn it off... you better believe that.

Typical Sony fanboys, if it was the other way around you'd all be agreeing lol.

RoadShow (on 10 October 2013)

I wouldn't say it's Sony fanboys. I personally love Sony, Nintendo and PC and have fought all this generation with many of my friends about xbox 360. Well not one of those people I fought with are getting an Xbox one. Finally their eyes have been opened and I have been proven right. I told them you have but to sit back and wait for M$ to screw you over again. When it happened they all made up their mind right then and their....their launch console is going to be a PS4.
