Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10. As a note all sales figures are retail only.

This week we will be looking at the top 10 selling games in August 2013 (Updated through the week ending August 31 2013). Last week we looked at the top 10 selling games in August 2013 and the week before that the top 10 selling Wii U games (Updated through the week ending August 24 2013).

Top 10 Selling Nintendo Games

Looking at the top 10 bestselling Nintendo games three were released in the 1980’s, one in the 1990’s, and six in the 2000’s.

The three titles released in the 1980’s, Super Mario Bros. (NES), Tetris (GB), and Duck Hunt (NES), sold a combined 98.81 million units or 32.94 million units on average per title.  The six titles released in the 2000’s, Wii Sports, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Sports Resort, New Super Mario Bros. (DS), New Super Mario Bros. Wii, sold a combined 232.39 million units or 38.73 million units on average per title. 

The top 10 bestselling Nintendo games have sold a combined 362.57 million units. The top selling title sold more than 80 million units and is the bestselling game of all time. Not only that but the entire top 10 list is also the 10 bestselling games of all time. The top two titles sold more than 40 million units and the top six sold more than 30 million units. The entire top 10 has sold more than 25 million units.

Looking at sales by platform two are for the NES, five are for the Wii, two are for the Gameboy, and one are for the DS. The two titles for the NES, Super Mario Bros. and duck Hunt, sold a combined 68.55 million units or 18.9 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The five titles for the Wii sold a combined 203.13 million units or 56.0 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Gameboy titles, Pokémon Red / Green / Blue, and Tetris, sold a combined 61.63 million units or 17.0 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

Top 10 selling Nintendo Games

The top 10 selling Nintendo games as a graph really shows how bundling games have helped games sell. Wii Sports and Super Mario Bros. were bundled almost all the time and most games in the top 10 had been bundled at one point.

The top 10 selling Nintendo games was done last year as well which included sales through mid-April 2012. Since then the top 10 list hasn’t changed much other than Wii Sports Resort moving up two spots and New Super Mario Bros. also moving up two spots. The top 10 has also sold 10 million more units.

Here are the sales outside the top 10: The top 17 titles has sold more than 20 million units and the top 33 titles has sold more than 10 million units. The top 75 titles have sold more than five million units and the top 190 titles have sold more than two million units. The top 309 titles have sold more than one million units and the top 408 titles have sold more than 500,000 units.

In total Nintendo has sold 1.64 billion games. There have been 153.58 million DS’s sold to date, 118.69 million Gameboy’s, 99.95 million Wii’s, 81.51 million Gameboy Advance’s, 61.91 million NES’s, 49.10 million SNES’s, 33.46 million 3DS’s, 32.93 million N64’s, 21.74 million GameCube’s, and 3.49 million Wii U’s.

It is quite fascinating to see that out of the 20 top sellers of all time, 16 were made by Nintendo.

Wii Sports doesn't count. It was just bundled with Nintendo's most succesful console to date. of course it's gonna have those numbers, but it's unfair for other great Nintendo games that have to sell themselves alone.

Sold almost 4m in Japan where it wasn't bundled so it would have at least passed the 30m+ mark even not being packed in with the system.

Meh, I'd count Wii Sports. People bought the game 'Wii Sports', not necessarily the Wii. The Wii just happened to be attached to the game.

You mean sales on a console with an install base of 100 million wont be the same as one with 3.5 million? No way man. My God you are the smartest person on the planet to have figured that out..
