Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10. As a note all sales figures are retail only.

This week we will be looking at the top 10 selling games in August 2013. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling Wii U games (Updated through the week ending August 24 2013) and the week before that the top 10 selling PlayStation Vita games (Updated through the week ending August 10 2013).

Looking at the top 10 bestselling games in August 2013, one was released in 2011, one in 2012, and eight on 2013. Of the titles released in 2013, two were released in June, two in July, and four in August.

The eight titles released in 2013 sold a combined 2,274,997 units in August or 284,375 units on average per title.  The two titles released in June 2013 sold a combined 442,156 units or 221,078 units on average per title. The two titles released in July 2013 sold a combined 525,890 units or 262,945 units on average per title. The four titles released in August 2013 sold a combined 1,306,951 units or 435,650 units on average per title.

The top 10 bestselling games in August 2013 have sold a combined 2,722,557 units. No games sold one million units during the month and only one, Saints Row IV, topped 500,000 units sold. Other than the top selling title, the rest of the top 10 sold between 200,000 and 300,000 units.

Looking at sales by publisher five of the titles are first party and five are third party. Of the first party titles two are published by Nintendo, one by Microsoft, and one by Sony. The two titles published by Nintendo sold a combined 474,732 units or 17.4 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

Of the five third party titles two were published by Deep Silver, two by Namco, and one by Ubisoft. The two titles published by Deep Silver, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Saints Row IV, sold a combined 819,002 units or 30.1 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two titles published by Namco, Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life (3DS) and Tales of Xillia (PS3), sold a combined 219,654 units or 8.1 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

The top 10 selling games in August 2013 as a graph really shows how slow sales get during the month. August has traditionally been the low point in gaming sales of the year and it is no different this year. Nearly 200,000 fewer games were sold in the top 10 compared to July 2013.

If we take a look at the sales by platform three are for the Xbox 360, three are for the 3DS, three are for the PlayStation 3, and one is for the Wii U. The three Xbox 360 titles sold a combined 1,029,230 units or 37.8 percent of the total games sold on the top 10. The three 3DS titles sold a combined 732,129 units or 26.9 percent of the total games sold on the top 10. The three PlayStation 3 titles sold a combined 715,166 units or 26.3 percent of the total games sold on the top 10.

Here are the sales outside the top 10: The top 10 titles sold 200,000 or more units and the top 17 titles sold 100,000 or more units. The top 45 titles sold more than 50,000 units and the top 93 titles sold more than 25,000 units.

Nintendo had the top selling platform for the month. There were 594,028 3DS’s sold for the month, which is a 4.1 percent increase month-over-month. Wii U sales increased 2.5 percent to 129,867 units sold and the Wii decreased two percent to 95,492 units sold. DS sales decreased 23.4 percent to 34,755 units.

Software sales for the 3DS decreased 12.8 percent to 2.26 million units sold. Wii software sales decreased 3.2 percent to 1.63 million units sold. DS software sales decreased 7.4 percent to 1.03 million units sold. Wii U software sales increase 18.3 percent to 676,772 units sold. Nintendo sold a total of 2.48 million games in the month of August.

The PlayStation 3 was the top selling platform for software with 4.86 million games sold. This was an 8.7 percent decrease. PSP software sales decrease 11.3 percent to 493,043. PlayStation Vita software sales decreased 2.2 percent to 428,191. Sony sold 555,266 games for the month.

Whichever way you see it Nintendo just makes more money than everyone else. No wonder everyone bashes Nintendo. They would make so much more money of they Nintendo wasn't around.

I would say if Nintendo wasn't around a lot of people wouldn't just immediately pick up a Vita and start playing that, people love to buy Nintendo products because they know what to expect.
