Weekly Sales Analysis, 3 August - Disney Magic Castle

Overview

Overall hardware sales increased by one percent week-on-week. Week-on-week sales are up for the 3DS, flat for the PlayStation 3 and Wii, and down for the Xbox 360, Wii U, DS, PSP, and Vita. Overall year-on-year sales are down 34 percent.  There are no platforms up year-over-year. The Wii has dropped by 74 percent year-on-year, the biggest by percent.

Three games debuted in the top 30 this week, which is the same as last week. Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life (3DS) debuted at the top of the charts with sales of 114,277.

There are no software milestones this week in the top 30.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware home console sales week-on-week is flat for the PlayStation 3 and Wii, and down for the Xbox 360 and Wii U. PlayStation 3 sales are up 509 (0%) to 116,755 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are down 2,128 (-3%) to 78,590 units sold. The Wii U sold 29,616 units, a decrease of 2,096 (-7%). The Wii sold 24,840 units, a decrease of 3 (0%).

Handheld sales week-on-week are up for the 3DS, and down for the Vita, DS and PSP. The 3DS sold 158,702 units, which is up 13,095 (9%) week-on-week. The PSP is down 2,048 (-5%) to 43,297 units sold. The PlayStation Vita sold 34,990 units which is down 2,590 (-7%) compared to last week. The DS is down 358 (-4%) to 9,539 units sold. Total week on week sales are down up 4,381 units (1%) to 496,329 units sold.

There are no platforms to be up year-on-year. The PlayStation 3 is down 29,794 (-20%), the Wii is down 70,189 (-74%), and the Xbox 360 is down 32,458 (-29%). The PSP is down 17,899 (-29%), the DS is down 21,838 (-70%), the Vita is down 579 (-2%) and the 3DS is down 116,712 (-42%). Year on year sales are down 259,853 units (-34%).

Home console hardware sales have increased for the PlayStation 3 for two weeks. The Wii has remained flat for one week. The Xbox 360 has decreased for one week, while the Wii U has decreased for three week. The PlayStation 3 has led for 31 straight weeks. The Wii U has outsold the Wii for four straight weeks.

The PlayStation 3 has a 53 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 36 percent market share; and the Wii has an 11 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the Xbox 360 and Wii U are up, while the PlayStation 3 and Wii are down.

Handheld hardware sales have increased for the 3DS for three weeks. The Vita has decreased for one week. The PSP has decreased for five weeks, while the DS has decreased for four weeks. The gap between the 3DS and Vita has increased slightly this week to 124,000 units, up from 108,000 units last week.

The PSP has an 82 percent market share this week for the seventh generation handhelds, while the DS has an 18 percent market share. The 3DS has an 82 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has an 18 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the 3DS and Vita are up, while the DS and PSP are down.

Worldwide Software

Three games debuted in the top 30 this week, which is the same as last week. Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life (3DS) debuted at the top of the charts with sales of 114,277. The game launched in Japan.

Killer is Dead (PS3) debuted at number 25 with sales of 17,900. The game launched in Japan.

Mind 0 (PSV) debuted at number 27 with sales of 15,850. The game launched in Japan.

Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts:  The Last of Us (PS3) is at number two with sales of 72,923. Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS) is at number three with sales of 69,021. Minecraft (X360) is at number four with sales of 58,828. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (3DS) is at number five with sales of 51,490.

Last week’s top debut, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies (3DS), is at number six with sales of 42,512. NCAA Football 14 (X360) is at number seven with sales of 39,544. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS) is at number eight with sales of 39,408. NCAA Football 14 (PS3) is at number nine with sales of 29,389. Pikmin 3 (WiiU) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 26,121.

Software home console sales week-on-week are down across the board. The PlayStation 3 sold the most games this week with sales of 1.05 million units, a decrease of 143,691 units (-12%).  The Xbox 360 sold 850,190 games this week, a decrease of 42,613 units (-5%). Wii software sales are down 19,920 units (-5%) to 387,605 games sold. The Wii U sold 118,545 games, a decrease of 47,776 (-29%).

Handheld software sales week-on-week are down across the board. The 3DS sold 641,940 games, which is down 158,690 units (-20%). The DS sold 253,399 games, a decrease of -21.375 units (-8%) week-on-week. PlayStation Vita game sales are down 50,989 units (-34%) to 99,892 games sold. The PSP sold 118,400 games, a decrease of 16,127 (-12%). Total combined software is down 501,191 units (-12%) week-on-week to 3.52 million.

Year-on-year software totals is up for the Vita, and down for the PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, DS, PSP, and 3DS. The PlayStation 3 is down 142,691 units (-10%), the Wii is down -678,852 units (-64%) and the Xbox 360 is down 189,284 units (-18%). The DS is down 186,284 units (-42%), the PSP is down 96,416 units (-45%), the 3DS is down 187,069 units (-23%), and the Vita is up 9,119 units (10%). Total combined software is down 1.32 million units (-27%) games sold year-on-year.

Home console software sales have decreased for the Wii U and PlayStation 3 for one week. The Xbox 360 decreased for three weeks and the Wii for four weeks.

The PlayStation 3 has a 46 percent market share, the Xbox 360 has a 37 percent market share, and the Wii has a 17 percent market share. Compared to ten weeks ago The Wii U is up, while the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii are down.

The 3DS sold the most software for a handheld for the 32nd straight week and shows no sign of giving up the top spot. The 3DS and DS have remained above their rivals, the Vita and PSP respectively. The 3DS sold more than six times as many games as the Vita. The DS sold twice as many games as the PSP.

The DS has a 68 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 32 percent market share. The 3DS has an 87 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 13 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the 3DS and Vita are up, while the PSP and DS are down.
