Analysts: Grand Theft Auto V to Sell Around 20m This Year

Analysts are starting to predict what they expect Grand Theft Auto V to sell this year. The title is set to be released on September 13 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It is the latest release in the hit Take-Two franchise.

Baird analyst Colin Sebastian expects Grand Theft Auto V to ship around 13 million units in the launch window and to sell around 20 million units by the end of the year.

Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz is predicting the game to sell around 18 million units by the end of the year. However, he admits it is a guessing game and it could sell anywhere from 15 million and 25 million units.

Grand Theft Auto V pre-orders have jumped up ever since the gameplay trailer was shown in July. The game has 835,124 pre-orders as of the week ending July 27, 2013. The Xbox 360 version has 449,209 pre-orders, while the PlayStation 3 version has 385,915 pre-orders.

According to VGCartz sales numbers GTA4 sold 9.86 million copies in the first 10 weeks on PS3 and 360. At the time there about 45 million PS3s and 360s sold. Now there are over 150 million consoles sold (granted a smaller % are still in use), so I think GTA5 selling 20 million units by the end of the year is a solid estimate. It could be off, but probably not by much, and it could even be a low-ball figure.

I doubt there are still 150 working Ps3/360 out there after all these years.

it'll get there, but not bye the end of the year. that's just way to soon.

It's a bit high but not completely impossible. The last three COD games sold close or over 20 million in just 8 weeks, GTA V will have over double that time before the year ends. Don't forget that this includes a holiday season. Even GTA IV sold 10M+ in just 10 weeks with a much smaller install base and without a holiday season. And with a smaller install base we are talking 35 million then against 156 million now.

There isn't exactly 156 million individual gamers. Some people have multiple consoles, some have two of the same console, and some have repurchased a console. It would have been much better had you said 100+ million.

At least get the release date right... 'sell anywhere from 15 million and 25 million units.' I think I can become an analyst too...

GTA4 sold between 25-27 million units, 3 million on the EFLC DLC. GTA5 will do the same sell even more than San Andrea/GTA4 not everyone going to get next gen systems on launch day or the first year. GTA5 in my option is going to be the fast selling video game than Call of Black Ops. Xbox 360/PS3 systems support will stop in 2015.

This when PS3/Xbox360/Wii was about to roll in By March 3, 2005, the game had sold over 12 million units for the PlayStation 2 alone, making it the highest selling game for PlayStation 2. As of September 26, 2007, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has sold 20 million units according to Take-Two Interactive.[33] As of March 26, 2008, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has sold 21.5 million units according to Take-Two Interactive. The Guinness World Records 2009 Gamer's Edition list it as the most successful game in the PlayStation 2, with 17.33 million copies sold for that console alone, from a total of 21.5 million in all formats. In 2010, GTA: San Andreas is the 3rd Best Selling game of all time. In 2011, Kotaku eported that according to Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has sold 27.5 million copies worldwide.

That sounds high for a game that is coming out on consoles that will be supplanted two months later.

No way. GTA IV has sold 20 million LTD. Just because there is a larger install base no way guarantees astronomically different sales for the same franchises. Also the impact on the next gen consoles may curtail sales slightly.

Actually, GTA IV has sold 25 LTD.
