Weekly Sales Analysis, 20 July - Dynasty Warriors 8

Overview

Overall hardware sales decreased by three percent week-on-week. Week-on-week sales are up for the Wii and 3DS, while all other platforms are down. Overall year-on-year sales are down 15 percent.  The 3DS is the only platform to be up year-on-year and is up by 25 percent. The DS has dropped by 68 percent year-on-year, the biggest by percent.

Two games debuted in the top 30 this week, which is down from six last week. Little Battlers eXperience W: Ultra Custom (3DS) debuted at number 15 with sales of 27,394. The game launched in Japan.

There are no software milestones this week in the top 30.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware

Hardware home console sales week-on-week is up for the Wii, and down for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. PlayStation 3 sales are down 4,926 (-4%) to 112,836 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are down 4,213 (-5%) to 77,323 units sold. The Wii U sold 32,770 units, a decrease of 6,293 (-16%). The Wii sold 224,456 units, a tiny increase of 51 (0%).

Handheld sales week-on-week are up for the 3DS, and down for the DS, PSP, and Vita. The 3DS sold 141,417 units, which is up 6,231 (5%) week-on-week. The PSP is down 1,410 (-3%) to 45,986 units sold. The PlayStation Vita sold 31,930 units which is down 2,036 (-6%) compared to last week. The DS is down 495 (-4%) to 11,494 units sold. Total week on week sales are down 13,091 units (-3%) to 478,212 units sold.

The 3DS is the only platform to be up year-on-year. The PlayStation 3 is down 29,329 (-21%), the Wii is down 32,656 (-57%), and the Xbox 360 is down 33,552 (-30%). The PSP is down 17,552 (-28%), the DS is down 24,844 (-68%), the Vita is down 8,557 (-21%) and the 3DS is up 27,999 (25%). Year on year sales are down 85,721 units (-15%).

Hardware Home Consoles

Home console hardware sales have increased for the Wii for one week. The 3DS has decreased for one week, while the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have decreased for three weeks. The PlayStation 3 has led for the last 29 weeks. The Wii U has outsold the Wii for two straight weeks.

The PlayStation 3 has a 53 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 36 percent market share; and the Wii has an 11 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the Wii U is up, while the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii are down.

Hardware Handhelds

Handheld hardware sales have increased for the 3DS for one week. The PSP and Vita have both decreased for three weeks, while the DS has decreased for two weeks. The gap between the 3DS and Vita has increased slightly this week to 109,000 units, up from 101,000 units last week.

The PSP has an 80 percent market share this week for the seventh generation handhelds, while the DS has a 20 percent market share. The 3DS has an 82 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has an 18 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the 3DS and Vita are up, while the DS and PSP are down.

Worldwide Software

Two games debuted in the top 30 this week, which is down from six last week. Little Battlers eXperience W: Ultra Custom (3DS) debuted at number 15 with sales of 27,394. The game launched in Japan.

Dynasty Warriors 8 (X360) debuted at number 19 with sales of 25,895. The game launched in North America and Europe. The PlayStation 3 version had already released in Japan earlier this year.

Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts:  Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (3DS) is at the top of the charts with sales of 130,348. The Last of Us (PS3) is number two with sales of 116,593. NCAA Football 14 (X360) is at number three with sales of 116,120. Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS) is at number four with sales of 90,368. NCAA Football 14 (PS3) is at number five with sales of 87,219.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS) is at number six with sales of 74,876. Minecraft (X360) is at number seven with sales of 49,086. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS) is at number eight with sales of 42,085. Dynasty Warriors 8 (PS3) is at number nine with sales of 33,497. Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D (3DS) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 29,855.

Software

Software home console sales week-on-week are down across the board. The PlayStation 3 sold the most games this week with sales of 1.16 million units, a decrease of 313,502 units (-21%).  The Xbox 360 sold 939,385 games this week, a decrease of 205,995 units (-18%). Wii software sales are down 24,172 units (-6%) to 403,837 games sold. The Wii U sold 121,153 games, a decrease of 78,997 (-39%).

Handheld software sales week-on-week is up for the 3DS, and down for the DS, PSP and Vita. The 3DS sold 731,544 games, which is up 198,119 units (37%). The DS sold 274,152 games, a decrease of 10,640 units (-4%) week-on-week. The PSP sold 126,050 games, a decrease of 20,392 (-14%).  PlayStation Vita game sales are down 13,428 units (-15%) to 77,430 games sold. Total combined software is down 469,007 units (-11%) week-on-week to 3.83 million.

Year on year software totals is up for the 3DS, and down for the PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, DS, PSP, and Vita. The PlayStation 3 is down 137,767 units (-11%), the Wii is down -410,385 units (-50%) and the Xbox 360 is down 218,091 units (-19%). The DS is down 249,498 units (-48%), the PSP is down 228,347 units (-64%), the 3DS is up 253,328 units (53%), and the Vita is down 33,601 units (-30%). Total combined software is down 903,208 units (-19%) games sold year on year.

Software Home Consoles

Home console software sales have decreased for the Xbox 360 and Wii U for one week, while the Wii has decreased for two weeks and the PlayStation 3 for three weeks.

The PlayStation 3 has a 46 percent market share, the Xbox 360 has a 38 percent market share, and the Wii has a 16 percent market share. Compared to ten weeks ago all four home console software sales are up for the PlayStation 3, Wii U, and down for the Wii, and Xbox 360.

Software Handhelds

The 3DS sold the most software for a handheld for the 30th straight week and shows no sign of giving up the top spot. The 3DS and DS have remained above their rivals, the Vita and PSP respectively. The 3DS sold nearly 10 times as many games as the Vita. The DS sold more twice as many games as the PSP.

The DS has a 69 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 31 percent market share. The 3DS has a 80 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a nine percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the 3DS is up, while the DS, PSP, and Vita are down.
